Chinese automaker targets faster EV charging with new 1.5 MW chargers

Geely is working on a new 1,000-volt electrical system for its electric vehicles, aiming to make charging times more like those of traditional cars. The company has built charging stations that can deliver up to 1.5 megawatts. In a recent test, a Lynk & Co 01 charged from 10 to 80 percent in just 5 minutes and 32 seconds.

These results show how fast Geely’s EV technology is improving. The company is now developing higher-voltage systems that could let future models charge even more quickly.

Geely moves beyond 800 volts

Geely has increasingly adopted 800-volt technology across its current EV lineup. The architecture extends across the vehicle’s battery, electric motors, power electronics, onboard charger, and wiring.

The company is now developing a 1,000-volt system and drive units that work at higher voltages. Geely has not yet shared detailed specs for this new technology, such as the maximum charging power future vehicles will support.

Its current charging performance already offers a glimpse of what the next generation could achieve. The Lynk & Co 01 recently charged from 10 to 80 percent in 5 minutes and 32 seconds. Reaching 97 percent from a 10 percent starting point took 8 minutes and 42 seconds.

01 reaches 1,100 kW peak

Some reports have described the Lynk & Co 01 as using a 900-volt system. However, its 95-kWh battery reportedly has a nominal voltage of 772.8 volts, placing it within the 800-volt category.

In tests, the car briefly hit a peak charging power of 1,100 kW at a Zeekr fast charger. At a BYD Flash Charging Station, it reached 430 kW.

The 1,100-kW figure represents peak output rather than power maintained throughout the session. Charging performance depends heavily on the battery’s charging curve, temperature, and thermal management.

1.5 MW chargers are already deployed

In March, Geely said it had set up over 2,100 Zeekr charging points that can deliver up to 1,500 kW. Current EVs cannot use all that power yet, so there is a gap between the chargers and the cars.

The planned 1,000-volt architecture could help close this gap. But higher voltage by itself will not ensure 1.5 MW charging. The battery and cooling system also need to be built to handle the extra heat and power.

BYD and CATL raise the stakes

Geely is joining a market where BYD already has similar technology. BYD’s Super e-Platform runs at 1,000 volts and is used in models like the Han L EV and Tang L EV. This system can support charging above 1,000 kW, and the Han L EV can reportedly add about 400 kilometers (249 miles) of CLTC range in five minutes.

BYD’s Megawatt Flash Charger can deliver up to 1,360 kW, while CATL’s second-generation Shenxing battery is targeting charging power of up to 1.3 MW.

Geely is also working on solid-state batteries, with testing planned for 2027. The top version could offer up to 500 Wh/kg of energy density and a range of over 1,000 kilometers (621 miles), but mass production is still some time off.
