Theatre in the Country is turning up the heat this month with two interactive entertainment experiences as part of its Summer Sizzle series.

They’re presenting the “wildly” popular “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding,” running today through Saturday (Aug. 19 to 22), followed in short order by “Dead Men Tell No Tales:
A Murder Mystery Game Night,” taking place Aug. 28 and 29.

Audience response to “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding” was so overwhelming, said Reg Parks, artistic director for Theatre in the Country (TIC), that after the original three performances sold out, they added the additional performance tonight (Aug. 19).
Part wedding reception, part improvisational comedy, and part audience experience, “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding” invites guests to become part of the celebration, explained Parks.

“The evening brings together Tony and Tina’s colourful families and friends for a wedding filled with food, dancing, family drama and unexpected surprises,” he said.

Rather than watching the action from a traditional theatre seat, guests attend the wedding as invited friends of the happy couple. As the reception unfolds around them, they may find themselves meeting members of the wedding party, dancing with relatives or becoming caught up in the increasingly chaotic festivities.”

Tickets for this event include a full buffet meal and dessert.

The Summer Sizzle continues the following weekend with “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” an original murder mystery game night written and facilitated by Mission playwright Elspeth Futcher.

In this case, guests will journey to Whispering Skull Island, where “X” marks the spot — and perhaps the scene of the crime, Parks explained.

“Welcome… This be a tale of pirates, of a map leading to a legendary treasure and, of course, of murder”, said Futcher.

During the evening, guests and their tablemates become the sleuths. They will question suspects, examine written and watch for tell tale signs as the suspects talk amongst
themselves.

“The goal is to determine the identity of the killer and the motive behind the crime,” Futcher added, noting prizes will be awarded for the best solutions.

Unlike a traditional murder mystery performance, the game-night format places the audience at the centre of the investigation. Futcher will facilitate the evening as participants encounter
suspicious pirates, buried secrets and clues leading toward the legendary treasure of Whispering Skull Island.

“Summer Sizzle gives us an opportunity to offer audiences something different from our regular theatrical season,” said Parks.

“Both events invite people to participate in the story, whether they are celebrating with Tony and Tina’s families or trying to solve a murder on a pirate island.”

Theatre in the Country is a community-based dinner theatre located in the Vineyard church on Glover Road in downtown Langley City.
