As Sri Lanka continues its resurgence as one of Asia’s leading travel destinations, Shangri-La Hambantota Golf Resort & Spa is emerging as a key player in positioning the island as a premier location for international weddings, where scale, setting, and storytelling come together.
This was demonstrated in March with the multi-day wedding celebrations of entrepreneur and Managing Director of Gulf-O-Flex, Rubber World Industry Global, Mujtaba Shaikhani, and Dr Hafsha, a renowned aesthetic medicine practitioner from Mumbai. The celebrations were hosted at the resort’s oceanfront setting.
Designed as an immersive, multi-day experience, the wedding featured 21 curated events held across the property, welcoming guests from the United Arab Emirates, India, Pakistan, the United Kingdom, and Sri Lanka. Over several days, the southern coastline served as a vibrant backdrop for cultural expression, celebration, and international connection.
The significance of the occasion was emphasised by the attendance of Hon. Vijitha Herath, Member of Parliament, highlighting the rising importance of destination weddings in Sri Lanka’s evolving tourism landscape.
Spread across 58 hectares overlooking the Indian Ocean, Shangri-La Hambantota offers expansive outdoor venues and the capacity to host large-scale, multi-format events. From sunset ceremonies to themed evenings, the resort continues to showcase a level of scale and flexibility that remains unmatched in the region.
The impact of international weddings extends well beyond the celebrations. Events of this scale support a broad network of local industries – including florists, designers, entertainers, transport services, and small and medium enterprises in the southern region. Multi-day weddings create sustained economic activity while presenting Sri Lanka’s creative and hospitality strengths to a global audience.
Shangri-La Hambantota has hosted several similar international weddings, and the resort expects destination wedding bookings to double this year based on confirmed events — a positive indicator for the wider tourism industry.
Shangri-La Hambantota General Manager Refhan Razeen, commented:
“Hosting a celebration of this scale is a testament to Sri Lanka’s ability to deliver world-class experiences with authenticity and warmth. Destination weddings are not only deeply personal milestones, but also powerful contributors to tourism – bringing global audiences to our shores while creating meaningful opportunities for local communities.”
The Shaikhani-Hafsha wedding underscores Sri Lanka’s potential within the high-value travel segment. With longer stays, higher per-guest spending, and international visibility generated through global networks, destination weddings are becoming an increasingly influential driver of tourism growth.
Shangri-La Hambantota, with its scale, versatility, and coastal setting, remains at the forefront of this trend, helping shape a future where celebrations contribute both to memorable experiences and to the country’s broader tourism narrative.
