Deciding who you want at your wedding can be a difficult task, but one bride and groom were left gobsmacked after a family member informed them she would be bringing along uninvited guests
A bride and groom were left furious after a guest sent them a “rude” response to their wedding invitation and decided to bring uninvited guests.
Deciding a wedding guest list is never easy and it can often cause riot between friends, family members, and any potential plus ones. But with a capacity limit at the majority of wedding venues, some tough decisions have to be made. One couple had narrowed down exactly who they both wanted to be present on their special day and excitably sent out their invitations, but a guest sent them a “curveball” response.
The bride and groom, who wish to remain unnamed, ensured to make it very clear that only those listed on the invitations were welcome – people should not bring plus ones or their children with them. But the duo were left gobsmacked when the groom’s second cousin took it upon themselves to disregard their wishes.
The guest RSVP’d to the couple and told them her entire family would be attending their big day. Even though it was made it clear that only those named on the invitations should attend, they were having none of it.
Taking to Reddit to explain what happened, the annoyed bride said: “We sent out Save the Dates for our July 2024 wedding and thought we had all our bases covered – checked the list twice, finalised the FAQ section on the website, set up the registry – just in case people wanted to RSVP early or needed more information. We are also a little over the max number we truly wanted, but decided to include as many people as we could.”
She added: “My fiancé’s second cousin threw us a curveball and RSVP’d for her entire family. In my opinion, it is clear on the invitation, the RSVP section of the website that only the people mentioned on the invitation are invited.”
The woman added that her partner’s cousin did not reach out to check if this was OK or ask about bringing a plus-one. She added: “She simply put all of her family members’ names in the section intended for the place cards and in the allergies/special accommodations section. She put: ‘there will be 4 of us attending’.”
“I had a really good laugh when this email in. For a few moments I found her audacity refreshingly hilarious. Then, I remembered this was a real response and I felt disrespected my fiancé’s and my opinions were not considered.”
The dilemma raked in hundreds of responses. One individual said: “It’s best to spell things out and be direct with people like this. I would 100% tell them in no uncertain terms, ‘X and X’ are invited but we cannot accommodate your kids, please do not bring your kids. They are not invited. If this means you cannot come we understand.”
Another advised: “Don’t stress yourself overthinking it. Tell her it’s not happening and be done with it. Your wedding.”
One other said: “Make it absolutely clear that If she shows up with her kids/more than one plus one, she will not be attending your reception and will be asked to leave. Advise her that there will be personnel at the wedding specifically to ensure only invited guests attend.”
