PAULS VALLEY, Okla (KFDX/KJTL) — A tragedy struck when two homeowners passed away, leaving behind 72 living cats and many that were deceased, trapped inside the home. The Pauls Valley Animal Welfare Society (P.A.W.S.) came together to help these animals.
A week went by before anyone could intervene, and what was discovered inside was truly heartbreaking. About 43 cats were rescued in the first round. Other organizations helped with the remaining animals. The total was roughly 72 cats.
In addition to the living cats, there were approximately 10 deceased cats and kittens in various stages of decomposition. There’s no telling how much suffering these animals endured or for how long. Despite the severity, there are still lives worth saving inside that home. It seemed like these poor animals had gone without food for far longer than a week.
P.A.W.S. joined forces with other rescue organizations to begin emergency removal. Their team is working through the structure and carefully extracting the cats.
Some of the adults are in fragile condition and one of them has been found with a newborn kitten. Over 80 cats, both dead and alive, are part of this overall crisis. There are no criminal charges involved.
Every single cat that was removed requires immediate medical evaluation, vaccinations, parasite treatment, testing and stabilization. Many are likely to be sick, injured or severely compromised.
A minimum of $5,000 are estimated just to begin basic veterinary intake and stabilizations for the group we are taking in and this does not include the cost of treating illnesses, infections or emergency care that will inevitably arise.
