What started as a random wedding photo turned out to be the beginning of a love story.
Danielle Morrison, 26, met her fiancé, Michael “Mike” Santos, 30, at her first cousin’s wedding on March 29, 2024, at The Park Savoy Estate in Florham Park, New Jersey. About seven months ago, her mother, Debbie, 58, came across the only photo of Morrison taken from the nuptials. Upon further inspection, she spotted Santos standing in the background.
“None of us noticed at the time,” Morrison tells PEOPLE. “We were all shocked and now call it our ‘invisible string,’ fate moment.”
Two months before the wedding, Santos split with his plus-one, so he “wasn’t very excited” about attending solo. Morrison felt similarly because almost everyone in her family is engaged or married, and would be attending with their partners while she would be stuck with her parents.
The bride, who’s Santos’ longtime coworker, had shown a picture of Morrison and her sister to Santos and other single attendees, and jokingly warned them to “stay away” as they were her only single relatives. Morrison had “no idea” this happened.

In the buffet line at the reception, Santos identified Morrison and said, “Hey, you look just like Jess. Are you guys related?” even though he fully knew the answer and they look nothing alike. Morrison “played along,” but eventually went back to her table.
After dinner, Santos decided to shoot his shot again. When Bryan Adams’ slow song “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” began playing, Santos saw his opportunity.
“I was sitting at the cousins’ table when I saw Mike walking toward me. I kept thinking, ‘There’s no way he’s actually coming up to me.’ But he did,” Morrison remembers. “He held out his hand and said, ‘You’re too pretty to be sitting for this, come dance with me.’ ”
Despite feeling “so nervous,” Morrison went with Santos. From the dance floor, she pointed out her parents next to them, so Santos joked aloud, “I’m being respectful,” and kept his hand “very high” on her back.
“From that moment on, we were side by side all night,” Morrison says.
After getting to know each other, the pair realized they had a ton in common. They even had “a little autoimmune bonding moment,” with Morrison having Type 1 diabetes and Santos having vitiligo.
Before Morrison left the wedding, Santos asked for her number.
“I honestly didn’t expect to hear from him,” Morrison admits. “I thought it was just a fun, one-time wedding moment.”
Santos texted Morrison “immediately.” While she was walking to her car, she saw that he messaged her a Star Wars meme. From that moment on, they spoke exclusively and made their relationship official on July 5, 2024.
“I’m definitely excited to see you again. You’re awesome,” one of Santos’ first texts to Morrison reads.
She replied, “Aww you’re sweet 🙂 I’m excited to see you again too! Ngl I wasn’t super hyped about going to this wedding solo before lol. But now I’m glad I got to meet you.”
“I was too but there’s always that chance of meeting someone that you hope for,” Santos texted back.
The couple got engaged this year on May 2 at the Boston Public Gardens.
A few days later, Morrison shared a summary of her love story on TikTok. She hopes her story spreads “hope” and encourages people to be “open-minded.” People always told her, “You’ll meet someone when you least expect it,” and her love story is proof of that.
“[I hope it] reminds people to say yes to things, even when they feel uncomfortable,” she tells PEOPLE, adding, “Trust your heart and your gut.”

The couple share an 8-month-old rescue puppy and reside in Bedminster, New Jersey, where they have a framed record of “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” hanging in their home. They haven’t set their wedding date yet, but are aiming for summer 2027.
“We feel so blessed for the life we built — all because of someone else’s wedding,” Morrison says.
