Cambodia issues new wedding guidelines, restricts rituals at engagement ceremonies

by R.Donald

Cambodia’s
Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts and the Ministry of Cults and Religion have
jointly issued new guidelines aimed at preserving the authenticity of
traditional Khmer wedding customs.

The
guidelines urge citizens not to perform the Sampah Pthuem ritual during
engagement ceremonies and discourage the use of non-traditional matching
uniforms at weddings.

The
ministries said the Sampah Pthuem ceremony — a traditional ritual
involving kneeling and hand-tying that symbolizes the formal union of a couple
— should be conducted only during wedding ceremonies and not at engagement
events.

Officials
argued that maintaining the distinction between engagement and marriage rites
is important for safeguarding Cambodia’s cultural heritage and ensuring that
traditional customs are practiced in their proper context.

The
guidance also calls for an end to the growing practice of bridal parties,
relatives and guests wearing identical uniforms or coordinated outfits that are
not rooted in Khmer traditions.

Authorities
expressed concern that modern trends and social media influences have
increasingly altered the appearance and meaning of traditional ceremonies.

The
ministries encouraged families to prioritize authentic Khmer attire and customs
when organizing weddings and related celebrations.

The
new recommendations form part of broader government efforts to preserve and
promote Cambodia’s intangible cultural heritage.

Officials
said traditional wedding ceremonies represent an important element of Khmer
identity and should be protected from practices that may dilute their cultural
significance.

The
guidelines have generated discussion on social media, with some users welcoming
efforts to preserve cultural traditions while others questioning whether
personal choices in wedding celebrations should be subject to official
recommendations.

Nevertheless,
the ministries emphasized that the appeal is intended to encourage respect for
Khmer customs and strengthen awareness of Cambodia’s cultural legacy among
younger generations.
