Actress and style siren Monica Bellucci always manages to make a standout jewelry statement with massive and historic diamonds. Embodying sheer Italian bombshell glamour, her jewelry has brought a singular romanticism to red carpets for nearly 30 years now.

A longtime Cartier ambassador, Bellucci has been a muse for the French luxury jewelry house since 1997, wearing some of the Maison’s most important jewels like Jeanne Toussaint’s panthère motif, María Félix‘s crocodile necklace, and Doris Duke‘s “Indian” diamond parure.

Last summer, the Malèna actress told Vogue Scandinavia, “Each time I wear Cartier pieces it feels like stepping into a timeless moment.” She said, “High Jewelry is for me about emotion and memory, those moments stay with you.”

A bona fide Bond girl, Bellucci has maintained a flourishing career in Italian cinema, while also starring in American films like Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Matrix franchise, The Passion of the Christ, The Brothers Grimm, and more recently, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

Never one to miss out on a red carpet jewelry moment, the icon is known for turning heads at film festivals across the world, wearing jaw-dropping stones from the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès at Cannes, to the island of Lido for the Venice Film Festival.

Bellucci knows best that “La Dolce Vita” style goes best with natural diamonds.

In 2004, the Italian actress became the first foreign public figure in history to be invited by the City of Paris and the Champs-Élysées Committee to inaugurate the Christmas illuminations on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Before Bellucci, the annual honor was only reserved for French icons and heads of state.

Kicking off the most famous Christmas illumination display in the world, Bellucci chose to wear a diamond Cartier Panthère collar necklace for the grand occasion. With the fierce feline in a perched position across her collarbone, the diamond chain-linked jewel holds a similarity to a style Timothée Chalamet has worn on multiple occasions now. Set in 18-karat white gold and black lacquer, the jewel is adorned with brilliant-cut diamonds.

Few jewels are as widely recognizable as the Cartier Panthère. First introduced as a watch motif in 1914 by Louis Cartier, the feline later came to life in natural diamonds under the visionary leadership of Jeanne Toussaint, who transformed it into one of the Maison’s most defining symbols.

Jewelry historian and lead curator of the V&A Museum’s blockbuster Cartier exhibition, Helen Molesworth, says, “It’s such a wonderful creature. You don’t have to be a naturalist to love the panther. It’s got this combination of power and strength, yet elegance and delicacy to it. When you blend those elements, they’re very translatable into design.”

Before strutting down the red carpet at the 2005 Venice Film Festival, Bellucci attended the photocall for her film, The Brothers Grimm, wearing huge diamond drop earrings from a historic Cartier parure.

Later that evening, the actress arrived for the film’s premiere in a spectacular coordinating Cartier “Indian” diamond necklace. Featuring 12 large Mughal-style suspended diamonds set in a contemporary-style necklace, each large stone is surrounded by a halo of smaller diamonds, dangling from a string of even more diamonds.

In 1971, Doris Duke purchased three separate lots, comprising a diamond pendant clip, earrings, and a necklace, which were ultimately combined to create a larger, more dramatic necklace. The necklace enjoyed a rare modern revival when it appeared on Bellucci, and later on Bridget Moynahan at the 2006 Met Gala.

Mexican actress and singer María Félix first commissioned her iconic crocodile necklace from Cartier in 1975. Composed of thousands of emeralds and yellow diamonds, the spectacular piece is matched only by its origin story. “There’s nothing really like it in the world,” says Molesworth. Rumor has it that she strolled into the Cartier boutique at 13 Rue de la Paix in Paris to request a special order, accompanied by a real baby crocodile for the designers to use as inspiration. She wanted Cartier’s expert jewelers to replicate the crocodile’s features as accurately as possible.

“She obviously loved very bold jewelry and decided that she wanted Cartier to make her this Crocodile necklace,” Molesworth explains. “She turned up to Cartier Rue de la Paix in Paris with a baby crocodile and said, ‘Make it like this.’”

María Félix sold most of her jewelry before her death in 2002. Cartier then reacquired the emerald and yellow diamond crocodile jewel, now included in the jeweler’s patrimonial collection. After Félix, Italian actress Monica Bellucci became the second person to ever wear the legendary necklace. She walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006, wearing a crisp white button-down shirt, left open at the top to properly display the jewel.

In 2019, Cartier revisited the crocodile design with a High Jewelry suite, paying homage to Maria Félix and her remarkable necklace. Reimagining the original motif, Cartier called upon the very same artisanal sculptor who crafted Félix’s crocodiles to be involved in the new design. The Maison worked with a rare collection of 14 cabochon-cut emeralds from Colombia, totaling 46.45 carats, for the updated suite, including a necklace, a matching bracelet, earrings, and a ring.

That same year, Bellucci kept tradition alive, walking the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, yet again, in a Cartier Crocodile necklace. The María Félix Tribute necklace is rendered in white diamonds with one crocodile, featuring emeralds on its back, meeting in the middle with a fringe of even more cascading emeralds.

Simultaneously predatory and protective, these reptilian beasts are depicted guarding exquisite emeralds and natural diamonds. Along with their live reptilian models, Cartier found inspiration in the gods. In ancient Egypt, the crocodile-headed deity, Sobek, represented strength, fertility, and protection.

Natural diamonds, too, have been revered for millennia as protective talismans believed to ward off evil spirits or curses. Many ancient cultures viewed them as symbols of strength, courage, and invincibility, often wearing them into battle or to ensure divine protection. The Ancient Egyptians believed diamonds represented the sun and signified power and courage. The crocodile continues to inspire Cartier to this day.
