Our editors’ 31 favorite health products

by R.Donald

Whether you’re focused on getting in your steps or making sure you sleep efficiently, the right wellness products can make all the difference. However, the health space is quite oversaturated, so it can be hard to figure out which items are the real deal and which are just convincing phonies. That’s why our team of hard-working editors at CNN Underscored is always on the lookout for the newest items that are actually worth your money and sure to genuinely improve your life.

We gathered our favorite wellness products — from an eye massager that has diminished one editor’s post-workday eye strain to a grip strength trainer that has helped a writer relieve his tendinitis pain — that are worth every penny. Here’s what we’ve been using to keep up with our self-care habits and fitness routines.

Whether my shoulders are sore from carrying a heavy bag while commuting or my legs need a bit of relief after a long run, this essential oil pain-relief stick helps temporarily assuage my various aches and pains. It doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy or slimy, so it’s easy to apply before bed or in the middle of the day. I also love the minty, refreshing scent (thanks to the peppermint and wintergreen oils in the formula), and it’s a consistent part of my self-care routine. — Ellen McAlpine, updates writer

I know Therabody offers more expensive massage guns with extra features, but I’m content with its entry-level Relief model. The battery life is superb, often lasting weeks on a single charge with infrequent use. It’s also plenty quiet, so you can use it at all hours without disturbing your housemate or partner. — Maxwell Shukuya, associate updates writer

Cable machine workouts and weightlifting in general are my current favorite exercises, but I also have delicate, uncalloused hands that tend to hurt when I’m strength training. I invested in these workout gloves that have a high rating on Amazon. I know a lot of weightlifters think wearing gloves is lame, but I don’t care! — Michelle Rae Uy, testing and updates writer

I’ve been loving the Oura Ring 5. It’s slimmer than its predecessors but still offers up the brand’s in-depth health data, including HRV, sleep and calorie tracking. What’s more, the brand just launched blood pressure analysis, a feature I love to check out daily in order to ensure I’m as healthy as possible. — Summer Cartwright, health and fitness editor

The social media hype got to me. You can certainly find ankle weights for less, but they don’t get more comfortable and attractive than these Bala Bangles. Their rectangular design and soft, silicone material make them comfortable to wear on the wrists and ankles when I’m doing kickbacks, fire hydrants and other glute exercises. I also like that they lay flat against the body, which makes them more discreet if you want to wear them while walking around the block. — Jacqueline Saguin, deals editor

The best part about this pull-up bar? Installation takes just three seconds (and no, I’m not exaggerating). Simply rest it on your door frame, and voilá! You’ve got one of the most versatile bodyweight fitness tools at your disposal. Even if you don’t plan to use it for doing pull-ups, it’s equally as great for doing hanging leg raises and dead hang stretches. — Maxwell Shukuya, associate updates writer

Although I normally use a water flosser, I still reach for string floss a few times per week, especially when traveling or if I feel like my teeth and gums just need a deeper clean. This year, I discovered Cocofloss and have since become obsessed with its thick, textured weave; the cleaning it delivers feels much more thorough than traditional thin floss. I highly recommend the variety pack, which comes with different flavors that actually make flossing kind of fun. — Nikol Slatinska, associate home and gifts editor

My dad’s been on the lookout for a smartwatch with a fitness tracker, long battery life and stylish looks, and this one from Dremac exceeded his expectations. A lot of smartwatches have a sporty look, but my dad wanted something that looked more elegant with a stainless steel band. He loves that the Dremac watch has a longer battery life than any smartwatch he’s used before: The battery lasts well over a month on one charge, so he doesn’t have to plug it in nightly. He also appreciates its easy navigation, many watch face options and visible heart rate, blood oxygen and stress level data. — Stephanie Luna, editorial coordinator

I have always been one to work from my couch, but the years of hunching over my laptop have really taken a toll on my lower back and neck. Once I switched to a formidable standing desk that can move up and down with the push of a button, the tension from my limbs melted away. Being able to alternate between standing and sitting has reduced back strain, “tech neck” and overall stiffness. And perhaps I’m imagining things, but I think my posture has improved too. — Carolina Gazal, associate testing writer

When I injured my shoulder, my physical therapist forced me to buy this large foam roller to stretch out. I’m glad he pushed me, because it’s now become a daily part of my routine, whether I use it for myofascial release or stretches. It’s ugly, but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a nice-looking foam roller. — Maxwell Shukuya, associate updates writer

I love Hoka shoes, but the Clifton lineup has never been my favorite. The newest Pro iteration, however, changed that for me. The shoes are made with supercritical foam, aggressive rockers and supremely durable outsoles that support every type of run, from tempo workouts to long runs. These have been a staple in my Berlin Marathon training. — Summer Cartwright, health and fitness editor

I’m testing this AI-powered, wall-mounted smart cable machine for a home gym equipment guide, and I think it’s a brilliant solution. It’s ideal for apartment dwellers who don’t have a spare room to turn into a dedicated workout space and ideal for people like me who prefer to work out at home. Its digital resistance maxes out at 100 pounds, but it’s definitely more than good enough for most people who want just regular strength training. It’s also very beginner-friendly. I love using it to stay healthy in the summer months when I don’t want to leave the house. — Michelle Rae Uy, testing and updates writer

I didn’t believe the hype until I tried this pillow for myself, but now I’m a convert. This pillow is very supportive while offering just the right amount of plushness for a comfortable night’s sleep. Testing it side by side with another pillow for side sleepers, I also see the difference; when I sleep on this one, there’s noticeably less pressure on my arm and shoulder, so I don’t wake up sore in the morning. Also, rather than overstuffing the pillow and forcing you to take out fill to customize it to your liking, Coop stuffs it with just the right amount and throws in a separate bag of extra fluff instead. Brilliant! — Michelle Rae Uy, testing and updates writer

I had really bad elbow tendinitis in both elbows for months, and this little rubber stick completely cured me pretty much instantly. You just follow the instructions and twist it back and forth with both hands … and that’s it. I probably used it for a total of 10 minutes over a couple of days and never needed it again. I went from popping a dozen ibuprofen a day to completely fine almost overnight. In terms of cost-to-life improvement ratio, no product has come close to this thing. Truly a life-changer. — Alex Rennie, testing writer

My friend works night shifts and finds it really hard to fall asleep afterward. I gifted her this eye massager and heat mask, and she loved both so much that I bought a pair for myself. I wear them for naps, whenever I get a tension headache or when I simply want to lie down and relax for 10 minutes. The heat and vibration modes are so soothing, and you can even connect your phone to it to listen to music, meditations or podcasts. — Rachel Quigley, managing editor

I switched from cheap, bulky drugstore earplugs to the Loop Dreams almost a year ago, and I’ve used them every night since, even when traveling. I love that you can get a custom fit with the differently sized tips that are so comfy I forget I’m wearing them. Unlike the single-size drugstore versions I used to wear, these never fall out. Best of all, you can buy replacement tips once yours have worn out (or, let’s be honest, once they become too caked with earwax to continue using). — Tamara Kraus, senior lifestyle editor

When I was 38, I got the high heart rate notifications on the Apple Watch Series 8, which would lead to me making some serious life changes, including getting a prediabetes diagnosis (that I beat the following year). So, for anyone looking to keep track of their heart, health and sleep, especially if you’re older, I recommend either the Apple Watch Series 10 or Series 11. I was a hater for ages — I didn’t like the idea of getting notifications on my wrist — but those can easily be turned off. Start paying attention before you regret missing early signs. — Henry T. Casey, tech writer

The Hyperice X 2 Knee is amazing for older runners and walkers with weak knees or knee pain. I struggle with minor knee pain after every run because my knees have always been weak in general, but this hot/cold compression recovery tool helps a lot. It’s actually impressive how it immediately alleviates pain and speeds up recovery. I use it after every run! — Michelle Rae Uy, testing and updates writer

After my mom’s knee replacement, she wanted to find a form of movement that would support her in recovery and beyond. Yoga allowed her to feel both challenged and motivated, and this extra-thick mat ensured her knee stayed comfortable during her practice. The half-inch mat is ideal for folks like her who have sensitive joints but still want to exercise at home or in the gym. At under $25, it’s an affordable wellness buy that has made a huge difference in her life. — Summer Cartwright, health and fitness editor

The first time I got a deep cleaning at the dentist, I asked him how I could avoid having to go through the very unpleasant process again. His answer? Invest in a water flosser. That was seven years ago, and I’ve thankfully not had to suffer through a deep cleaning since. To be clear, a water flosser should be used in addition to regular flossing; you’ll be surprised by how much food debris regular flossing doesn’t reach. My teeth and gums are much healthier, and at 42 years old, I don’t have a single cavity. — Rachel Quigley, managing editor

Inspired by the founder’s dad, who struggles with intense muscle spasms and plantar fasciitis, the Rally Orbital Massager is the massage gun I’ve always dreamed of, and that’s not an exaggeration. I’ve used three different massage guns in the past, and honestly, none of them were as satisfying to use and effective as this one. Its fast orbital action and three different unique attachments work my shoulder knots and sore leg muscles effortlessly (and quickly too, providing instantaneous relief). — Michelle Rae Uy, testing and updates writer

Anyone who sits for large swaths of the day knows that lower back pain seems like something of an inevitability, but it doesn’t have to be. I’ve been sitting on the ComfiLife seat cushion for eight hours a day, five days a week for going on five years now (I work a desk job after all), and it’s made the experience considerably more comfortable by taking pressure off my tailbone and promoting healthier posture. If you have no choice but to be sedentary, whether it’s for work, a commute or long-haul travel, it’s a no-brainer to have this cushion backing you up. Literally. — Chelsea Stone, editorial director

I have arthritis, and I love to run marathons; these two things don’t exactly pair well together. However, these recovery shoes from Vktry help me post-race when my knees and hips are extra sensitive. The specially made clogs are similar to Crocs but constructed with specialty cushions and arch support to ensure your body is supported when you’re recovering (and even when you’re not). They’re also super convenient to wear during errands or while gardening because they’re both slip-on and water-resistant. — Summer Cartwright, health and fitness editor

These compression boots are expensive, but they’re the sole reason I’ve been able to train as a long-distance runner. The boots quickly became part of my recovery routine as I picked up my mileage during marathon training. The air compression therapy helps reduce swelling and soreness so you feel better faster. Folding them back up is simple, and they can also be easily stored under my bed (a huge win for this tiny NYC apartment dweller). Plus, I love how I can adjust the pressure and time duration based on my needs. I’ve had them for three years now with no issues, and I plan on using them for all the training blocks to come. — Ellen McAlpine, updates writer

Turns out, all I needed to make sure I was drinking enough water throughout the day was the right water bottle. I love this one from Yeti — it also happens to be Underscored’s favorite, best-tested water bottle — because it’s able to keep water cold for a whole day, it’s easy to slip into a tote bag and be brought to work and it’s dishwasher-safe. There’s no annoying straw to clean up, and the chug cap ensures I’m not spilling when I take a sip either. I also love that the super-durable, stainless steel bottle is designed to last. — Ellen McAlpine, updates writer

I spend way too much time on my phone, and on days when I spend more time on it than usual, I feel so sluggish and unmotivated. I got the Brick a few weeks ago, and I’m already loving the impact it has had on my life. Whether I need to focus on work or set aside some time to read, locking certain apps on my phone has done wonders for me. — Kai Burkhardt, outdoors, sustainability and pet editor

I cannot overstate what playing basketball has done for me both physically and mentally. I recently rediscovered my love for the sport after not playing meaningful hoops since junior high, and now I rarely go a few days without putting shots up. My current ball of choice is the Spalding Zi/O Excel, which has a grippy all-surface coating that works just as well when I’m shooting around solo at the park as it does when I bring it to indoor pickup games at the gym. From the Zen-like hours I spend practicing while listening to podcasts to the competitive drive and community I get from playing locally, I can definitively say that playing basketball has significantly improved my adult life. And it all started with finding a good ball. — Mike Andronico, senior tech editor

I’m unfortunately not the type of person who experiences a rush of endorphins when working out, so wanting to break a sweat is never at the top of my to-do list. Fortunately, I do like video games, and Ring Fit Adventure on the Nintendo Switch has been a game changer when it’s come to exercising. This game gets me moving and having fun without it feeling like a chore. I truly don’t think I’d do any cardio without it. — Lindsey Smith, newsletter editor

I’ve been plagued with lower back problems for as long as I can remember, and while hot yoga and monthly trips to the chiropractor help, there are some days when the discomfort or achiness keeps me from getting much done. That’s where the Venom 2 comes in. The compression belt provides three levels of heat combined with vibrations that help alleviate pain and reduce tension in my lower back. I use it a few times per week at the end of the day, and I always notice I sleep better and feel less stiff the next morning having used it. It’s expensive, but believe me, it is worth every cent. — Rachel Quigley, managing editor
