According to a news release, one victim reported being approached on June 4 just before 1 p.m. in the area of Renda Street and Henderson Boulevard.
A resident was gardening in their front yard when a white vehicle parked unannounced at the end of their driveway.
The vehicle occupants, two males and one female, all were described as having a darker complexion, possibly of East Indian descent. The individuals then asked the victim for directions.
After directions were provided the male driver exited the vehicle and placed a gold chain around the victim’s neck. The driver stated this was something done in their culture as a thank you. The victim was also given a bag of gold jewelry by a female seated in the rear passenger seat of the vehicle.
After the vehicle had left, the victim realized the suspects stole two gold necklaces which the victim had been wearing around their neck.
Kingston Police have issued some tips to prevent falling victim.
- Keep valuables covered: Avoid displaying expensive jewelry in public spaces.
- Maintain strict personal boundaries: Never let strangers approach you closely, place accessories (like necklaces or bracelets) on your body, or touch your existing jewelry.
- Never accept unsolicited gifts: Scammers often offer fake gold or costume jewelry as a “sign of gratitude,” using this distraction to steal your real valuables.
- Watch for accomplices: Be highly cautious of groups; one person might distract you with a conversation while an accomplice reaches for your valuables
