There’s hardly a sound save for the thump, thump of the beating of your own heart. Before you unfurls a horrific monstrosity. You and your fellow investigators have put together the clues, you’ve got the gear, but can you truly face an Eldritch abomination… without a fancy playmat or deck box? THESE are the questions you must ask yourself as you check out our brand new product spotlight of a suite of incredible Arkham Horror The Card Game Accessories, created (and provided to us by) Gamegenic.
I’ve spoken about my love of Gamegenic products in the past, they’re my go-to storage solution for Magic: the Gathering, and I think the quality across the board is top of class. So when I heard about a new line products specifically designed for Arkham Horror The Card Game I was immediately intrigued. Let’s dive in!
Arkham Horror Game Night Chest
First up is this big beauty, the Game Night Chest. Designed to hold just about everything you need in the game in one handy box, I really love the look, feel, and use of magnets to snap the lid snugly into place. There’s space for four Investigator Deck Tome boxes (more on those in a bit), as well as a pull out container for all of your tokens.
It’s smart storage solutions for a game with SO many bits, pieces, and bobs, plus cards upon cards. If you’re seriously into the game, with your same characters growing and moving from campaign to campaign, this could be right for you. It’s not cheap, coming in at MSRP $119.99, but if you’re really plugged into the game, this is a splashy, premium way to show it off and keep it safe and organized.
Arkham Horror Playmats
Next I want to show off three very cool, very different kinds of playmats available for the game.
First up are these gorgeous full-art Game Mats for the game, including a Shiny playmat (the one in the center of the above pic). These are generic, so if you’re just a fan of the artwork and want to swag it with other TCG’s, you totally can. But if you’re looking for something a little more specific and helpful to your game, Gamegenic’s got that too.
This is the Player Mat, and it has a tidy spot for each of your card types as you play the game. I’m a sucker for a playmat like this, though I recognize it’s not strictly necessary to play the game.
You and your fellow investigators may not each feel comfortable shelling out for these, though I will say the MSRP of $16.99 is way more affordable than I would have expected for the quality level on display here. It’s smaller than the game mats, which is actually nice if you’re all looking to fit one of these on the table.
And speaking of the table, the game itself loves to spread out as you explore more locations, so something like this Center Game Mat can be extremely useful. It takes up the majority of the table at almost 28″ x 28″, but this will give you the space you need to lay out all the various cards you’ll unfurl in any given Act of the game.
Arkham Horror Premium Chaos Tokens & Bag
Here’s another item I won’t describe as strictly necessary, but if I really love a game the way I’m falling in love with Arkham Horror: The Card Game, and there’s an option to swap out cardboard components for fancier ones… I’m definitely taking that option. These tokens replace the chaos tokens and bag included in the game (which, if you haven’t played, is sort of how you get random results instead of rolling dice, etc.), and the bag you pull them from, and they have a great feel to them.
The tokens themselves are acrylic, and slide on the table and game mats so nicely. The bag itself is a nice upgrade too, designed to sit flat with some inlaid support on the bottom of the bag.
Arkham Horror Investigator Deck Tome
Saving the best for last in this showcase, let’s check out the newly updated entry in this roundup of Arkham Horror The Card Game Accessories, the new Investigator Deck Tomes. Designed to hold your Investigator Deck and keep it organized, I’m most surprised and delighted by these.
There’s a deck box designed for each of the different investigator classes, Guardian, Seeker, Rogue, Mystic, Survivor, and a neutral one as well if you prefer that. Using the same magnet tech to keep things snug and locked in place, these boxes keep a full deck safe – even sleeved, and there’s a cutout window so you can see your investigator’s picture card (as well as their name as it peeks through from their full character card). Each one has an MSRP of $24.99, and though I wouldn’t have thought I needed one, now that I’ve been playing with one I don’t think I would go back.
There are more new products we didn’t cover, like sleeves and connector tokens, that you should definitely explore. Head over to Gamegenic to check them out! Overall, I think these all range from “nice to have” to “need to have,” depending on your level of commitment to the game. If Arkham Horror: The Card Game is the kind of game you break out once in a blue moon, sure – you probably don’t need any of this stuff. But if you’ve got a regular group playing a campaign, I think it’s definitely worth it to grab some of the storage solutions and a few Player Mats at the least.
