EDITOR’S PICK: BEST WHITE SNEAKERS
Converse Chuck 70 De Luxe Squared Foundation High Top, $180 at Converse
Why we love it: Unique take on cult-favourite shoe; elevated shape; comfortable.
What to consider: May be too narrow for those with wide feet; a bit heavy.
Material: Canvas, faux leather and rubber | Colour: Egret/Black, Black/Egret, Mud Mask/Nutty Granola | Size: Unisex – US 5 to US 15
Tried and Tested by Harriet Amurao, Shopping Writer
For someone who has only ever owned black Converse, white Converses were just never an option in my book until I saw the Chuck 70 De Luxe Squared.
As seen on one of my favourite K-pop idols, Karina from Aespa, I was a little unsure but also intrigued so when I was given the opportunity to try them out I was stoked.
When I first popped them on, it truly felt like I was walking on a cloud – the platform sole combined with OrthoLite cushioning was a match made in heaven. They were so comfortable to walk in and every step I took had a little bounce, and although a little stiff – I know they’ll be perfect once I’ve worn them in. I typically prefer a simple and classic look to my footwear, and Converse have truly pushed me out of my comfort zone with this next-level pair.
They’re truly not like any other you’ve seen before and I think that’s its charm. The basic and neutral colourway makes it wearable for casual days while the extra features of the squared toe and sole and faux leather patchwork detail make them elevated enough for going out.
Not to mention, they’re quite easy to style (which I did not expect) – I love styling them with a graphic tee and denim maxi skirt. However, I know they’d look super cute with a baby tee and baggy wide leg pants, a mini skirt, midi dress and everything in between.
So, if you’re after a pair of white sneakers that are a subtle statement maker (and give you extra height), you’ll love these ones!

At the end of the day there’s no “right” answer – it all comes down to personal preference. Here’s a few factors to take into consideration to help you make your choice, though:
Budget: Are you looking for a super cheap pair, or after a pricier, higher quality pair that will last you longer?
Style: Do you prefer a low or high profile on the ankle? Do you want a totally flat sole, or a slight platform for added height and cushioning?
Material: Leather sneakers may last longer, but canvas styles may be cheaper and more lightweight. Polyester or cotton also tend to be cheaper.
Colour: Do you want a simple all-white pair, or do you like some metallic or colourful accents to brighten your outfit?

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW DO I CLEAN WHITE SNEAKERS?
One of the only downsides to wearing white sneakers on the daily is keeping them clean and sparkling white.
You can prevent stains by spritzing your shoes with a protective water and stain repellent before you wear them outside. Something like the Nanoman Protective Spray works on all materials like fabric, suede, leather and canvas and has great reviews on Amazon.
While you can get away with throwing canvas sneakers in the washing machine on a short cool cycle, this obviously won’t work for suede or leather shoes. You could use a spot cleaner like the Crep’s Protect Eraser or diehard sneaker collectors can invest in the newly released Sneaker Cleaner from Philips.
As a self-proclaimed sneaker head, I decided to put the Philips Sneaker Cleaner to the test.
Retailing for $49, the device promises to be the ultimate sneaker cleaner, offering up to 500 rotations per minute and three different brush heads to choose from.
It’s recommended you use the hard brush for textured rubber and soles, the soft brush for mesh and canvas and the sponge brush for PVC, leather, suede and other delicate materials.
I made sure to use all three heads on different parts of different shoes and followed the instructions of simply using soap and water.
In the image below, the left hand side shows my sneakers before – you can see some clear dirt marks and overall dullness to the colour of the shoes – and the right hand side shows my sneakers after.
Using the Philips Sneaker Cleaner, I could see a visible difference in the overall appearance of my sneakers – they look cleaner and much brighter, plus I love how easy it was to clean obvious dirt marks and stains.
While I don’t think the average person needs to invest in this, I do think it’s a cool gadget for a sneaker head to have – and it makes a great gift idea too.
