Google introduced AI messages for its in-car infotainment app, Android Auto earlier this year. According to a report by 9to5Google, the tech giant has reportedly started rolling out the Android Auto 11.4 update. With this update, Google is making the AI message summaries feature available to all Android Auto users.

This feature will help Android Auto to quickly understand long messages without having the app’s Google Assistant read the whole thing aloud. The feature popped up in Android Auto’s settings quickly soon after Google announced it. However, the feature wasn’t actually live for all users. Now, the report claims that the feature has been widely rolled out..

Android Auto AI message summaries: How it worksAfter installing the Android Auto 11.4 version, Google will send users a notification to their phones explaining that message summaries are now available. Users won’t have to take any action with this, but it will offer a shortcut to settings to manage the feature.

It is important to note that the AI message summaries feature will work only for longer messages and it will summarise the content in 40 words. For shorter messages, Google Assistant will still read the full message aloud.

The first time a user triggers the AI message summary feature, Google will alert them that it is generating a summary and that the contents may be slightly incorrect. While that message is being read, a silent notification on the user’s phone will also show up to indicate that the summary is being generated.

As per the report, while reading aloud, a test message of over 100 words was summarised down to about 15 words. The report claimed that the summarised message purged some of the detail in the process, but the overall meaning was preserved. The report also noted that the results may vary depending on the scenario.

The report also noted that when an AI summary is being read, there will be no difference in the on-screen reply UI. The message on the screen also takes up the entire display after it recently got redesigned.
