Kanpur: The income tax department raided the head office of a prominent tobacco company in the city.Raids have also been conducted simultaneously at 20 other locations of the company including Delhi, Mumbai, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. The raid which started on Thursday is still going on.High-end luxury cars including a Rolls-Royce Phantom, McLaren, Lamborghini, and Ferrari, worth Rs 100 crore were found to be parked at the company owner’s mansion in Delhi.Meanwhile, IT sleuths have seized Rs 4.5 crore after raiding various establishments, including premises of a Kanpur-based tobacco company. No official confirmation, however, has been made yet by the IT department in this regard.The tobacco company, based in Kanpur, was raided by an Income Tax Department team on Thursday evening.The 15-20 teams of the IT department simultaneously conducted similar searches on the premises of people linked to the company in five states, including Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi.As per income tax department sources, the tobacco company, which supplies raw materials to other firms, evaded filing taxes and GST on a large scale. Apart from luxury cars, luxury bikes have also been found at the businessman’s house.Further investigation revealed that the last 4 digits of their two-wheeler and four-wheeler were the same. More benami properties of the company owner KK Mishra are being investigated. Sources said the company supplies tobacco to popular ‘gutkha’ companies of Kanpur. “It has also been revealed that the company was playing the game of tax evasion by issuing fake cheques to a bogus company. It also came to fore that the company has reported a turnover of Rs 20 to 25 crore, but in reality, the turnover is around Rs 100-150 crore,” the sources said further.
