According to the latest data from the Customs Department under the Ministry of Finance, Vietnam imported a total of 72,290 completely built-up vehicles during the first four months of 2026, with a total import value of around $1.75 billion.

Compared to the same period in 2025, import volume rose 11.2%, while import value jumped 25.2%.

In April alone, Vietnam imported 16,580 vehicles worth approximately $433.82 million, down 34.4% in volume and 26.4% in value compared to March.

Compared to April 2025, the number of imported vehicles fell 11.4%, although total import value still edged up 2.6%.

The figures suggest that the average value per imported vehicle is rising noticeably, as importers increasingly focus on bringing higher-value models into the country.

Southeast Asian countries continued to dominate Vietnam’s automotive import supply, accounting for 45,074 vehicles shipped to the domestic market in the first four months of the year.

The total import value from ASEAN countries reached approximately $734.61 million, representing 62.4% of Vietnam’s total imported vehicle volume.

However, this share declined significantly from 73.8% recorded during the same period last year, when Vietnam imported roughly 47,300 vehicles from the region.

Indonesia remained Vietnam’s largest vehicle exporter with 27,170 units shipped during the January-April period, marking a 13.6% increase year-on-year.

Popular Indonesian-made models imported into Vietnam mainly include affordable passenger cars such as the Toyota Yaris Cross, Avanza Premio, Mitsubishi Xpander, Xforce, Destinator, Suzuki XL7, Fronx and Honda BR-V.

The most notable development came from China’s accelerating rise.

China became Vietnam’s second-largest source of imported vehicles, rapidly catching up with Indonesia.

During the first four months of 2026, Vietnam imported 23,723 vehicles from China, up 68.6% compared to the same period last year.

Import value from China also surged 85.69%.

Thanks to this rapid growth, Chinese vehicles expanded their market share in Vietnam to 32.8%, reflecting the aggressive entry of multiple Chinese car brands into the market.

Meanwhile, Thailand fell from second place in 2025 to third position this year, with 17,904 vehicles exported to Vietnam, down 25.56% year-on-year.

Vehicles imported from Thailand mainly include pickup trucks and SUVs such as certain versions of the Ford Ranger and Everest, Toyota Corolla Cross and Hilux, Mitsubishi Triton and Attrage, Honda HR-V and Mazda2.

Beyond ASEAN countries and China, Vietnam also imported vehicles from several smaller markets.

Japan accounted for 2.15% of total imported vehicle volume, while imports from the European Union represented 0.6%.

Markets including India, the United States, the United Kingdom, South Korea and Russia each accounted for less than 0.5% of total imports.
