US-based electric vehicle maker Tesla is a leading company in developing autonomous systems in cars. The company already offers multiple features in their cars. The Elon Musk-led company is now developing a feature that will help its cars to park themselves. Tesla CEO Musk took to social media platform X (previously Twitter) to confirm the development of the feature.
The billionaire said that with this feature, Tesla cars will be capable of identifying and parking in open spots in the coming days.
In the X post, Musk said: “We are working on a feature where the car identifies probable viable parking spaces. You tap on one, exit the vehicle and it parks there.”
Currently, all Tesla cars ship with a parking assist feature. This feature can detect nearby objects while driving below five miles per hour or in reverse.
Moreover, Tesla’s autopilot also has an auto-park feature. This allows the cars to manoeuvre into both parallel and perpendicular parking spaces.
However, it is important to note that Tesla cars can park at speeds below 13 mph and 8 mph respectively.
Other carmakers offering similar features
The latest development may seem to be a breakthrough in autonomous parking technology, but other carmakers also offer similar versions of the feature.
Hyundai developed an upgrade to its parking system. The new system allows a car to study its parking environment and drive into the selected parking spot.
This system uses ultrasonic sensors and surround view monitors to scan its environment. This technology helps select Hyundai cars to smoothly navigate into a spot.
Hyundai’s technology can also memorise locations where it was parked earlier and can store 100 metres of a route in its database to park again.
Apart from this, Mercedes also created a version of this technology for its 2024 E-Class models.
This autonomous parking tech allows drivers to pilot the car using their phones to get in and out of tight spaces.
