Northern Ireland’s under pressure animal rescue have revealed the most common reasons presented by people surrendering their dogs to their care.
- Haven’t got enough time anymore
- Cannot afford the food bills
- Cannot afford the vet fees
- My partner is pregnant and we are worried about the dog and baby
- Want to surrender my old dog as it is not getting on with our new pup
- End of tenancy with current home and cannot get another property where landlord will accept pets
- Our child is allergic
- Partnership break up and unable to look after pet on my own now
- Got the dog as a therapy dog but it’s not helping my child
- I used to work from home but now I have to go back to the office
- The dog is toileting inside and I can’t get them house trained
- Dog got pregnant and I can’t get homes for the pups
- Son/daughter has moved away and left dog with parents who cannot cope with looking after pet
- Not our dog – it just arrived our our house
- The dogs are too old and we cannot look after them anymore
- The dog had become destructive
- The dogs are escaping from the garden
- The dog is showing aggression towards family and other dogs
