AUSTIN, Texas — After signing a 75-year lease agreement with the City of Austin, Austin Pets Alive! recently announced its plan to expand to four locations in the Austin area.
The animal center said that one of the challenges of only having one location in Austin is that “in the last three years, we have experienced a 20% annual increase in animal intake.” Austin Pets Alive! is a no-kill animal shelter in Austin, and allows the city to be the largest no-kill city in the country.
The campaign is looking to raise about $45 million for the expansion, and a news release on the website outlines that the current APA facilities have “inadequate space” and are “on the verge of collapse.”
The Town Lake Animal Center will be torn down and reconstructed with a focus on fostering to increase capacity, with the plan to tear down the building beginning in 2027 and the new one going up in 2028. There will also be a new hospital in Sunset Valley and a transport hub located in Elgin. According to the website, the rehabilitation center will be based in East Austin, and it is projected to start construction in 2025 and be operational by 2027.
