A Newbury vet clinic issued an urgent warning to local pet owners after treating multiple cases of feline heatstroke within just 24 hours.
Falkland Veterinary Clinic, based on London Road, urged the community to take immediate precautions to protect their cats after a recent spike in temperatures.
With more hot weather expected as the summer progresses, vets are reminding owners on what to prepare for during heatwaves.
To prevent heat exhaustion, the practice advised owners to ensure cats always have constant access to cool, shaded spaces and fresh water.
Vets also suggested adding water directly to their food to boost hydration during warmer spells.
Other practical tips included placing ice packs wrapped in towels near their favourite resting spots, or positioning an ice pack behind a running fan to help lower the room’s temperature.
Key symptoms of feline heatstroke include mouth breathing, panting or a noticeable increase in respiratory rate and effort.
Excessive drooling, red or pale gums, vomiting and diarrhoea were also highlighted as major warning signs, alongside confusion or total collapse.
