Camping trips are a popular way to take a holiday – and can also be handy if you have a dog, as you can bring your pooch with you.

However, you will of course have to ensure the safety and comfort of your pet, which will require some careful planning and consideration.

After all, there are various hazards you need to be aware of if you’re planning to go camping with your furry friends, from wildlife encounters, to extreme temperatures.

According to Teddy, the founder of White House Glamping in Herefordshire, there are some essential tips you can follow to ensure your pets’ safety and comfort while on camping trips.

Research pet-friendly campgrounds 

The first step when planning any holiday is research, and camping – especially with a pet – is no different. 

Teddy said: ‘Before embarking on your camping adventure, research pet-friendly campgrounds that welcome furry guests. 

‘Look for facilities that offer pet waste disposal stations, designated pet areas, and nearby hiking trails suitable for dogs.’

Pack pet-friendly gear 

Teddy recommends packing gear specifically designed for camping with pets. 

Among the items you are likely to need are a sturdy leash; collapsible water bowl; and pet-friendly insect repellent.

In addition, if you plan to engage in water activities, you should take a comfortable water-proof harness or life jacket.

Set up a secure sleeping area 

Your pet will need a safe and secure sleeping area, which you can create by bringing along a portable pet crate, or tent. 

You should make sure the sleeping area is well-ventilated and protected from extreme temperatures. 

In addition, Teddy said: ‘Adding familiar bedding or a favourite blanket will provide comfort and reassurance for your pet.’

Ensure proper nutrition and hydration 

Just like humans, pets need access to clean water and nutritious food while camping. 

Pack plenty of fresh water, portable food bowls for your pet, and their regular diet or specially formulated camping meals. 

‘Avoid feeding pets unfamiliar or potentially harmful foods found in the wilderness,’ said Teddy.

Protect against wildlife encounters 

Be vigilant about potential wildlife encounters and take precautions to protect your pet from harm.

Keep pets on a leash at all times and avoid leaving them unattended, especially in areas known for wildlife activity. 

Teddy said: ‘Familiarise yourself with local wildlife and learn how to safely respond in case of an encounter.’

Use a collar and leash 

In remote camping locations, it is crucial to ensure your pet is properly identified with a collar tag or microchip containing up-to-date contact information. 

Additionally, always keep your pet on a leash to prevent them from wandering off or getting lost in unfamiliar surroundings.

Monitor the weather 

Extreme temperatures can pose a significant risk to pets, especially in hot or cold environments. 

Teddy advises monitoring temperature conditions closely and taking appropriate measures to keep pets cool or warm as needed. 

This may include providing shade, using cooling vests or mats, or bundling up in cold weather.

Always clean up after your pet 

Always clean up after your pet, dispose of waste properly, and avoid disturbing wildlife or sensitive habitats.

Teddy said: ‘As a pet owner and outdoor enthusiast, I believe it’s essential to prioritise the safety and well-being of our furry companions when venturing into the wilderness. 

‘By following these tips and being mindful of potential hazards, you can ensure that your pet has a safe and enjoyable camping experience.
