SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – As we continue to deal with the brutal typical summertime heat, we continue to talk about the effects it can have on us. But what about our pets? It can be dangerous for them as well, so here are some tips and suggestions to follow on keeping your pet safe in the heat.

The first and most important tip is to remember to never leave your pet in a hot car even if it is just for a few minutes. Cars sitting stagnant and with no air circulation heat up very quickly even with the windows cracked open.

The next thing to remember is to limit exercise and outdoor time on very hot days. Pets can become overheated just like us humans, so changing their exercise time to morning or evening will help tremendously.

Always avoid walking your pets during the heat of the day and on hot pavement. The concrete and asphalt can be as much as 25-50 degrees hotter than the air which can burn their paws. Make sure to walk them morning or night, or in the shade on the grass.

Keep your pets cool and hydrated at all times. Always make sure they have access to water, shade, and inside if they get too hot.

Lastly, it is important to know the signs of heat exhaustion and stroke in your pets. Symptoms can include heavy panting, difficulty breathing, fast heart rate, dark red gum color, weakness, and inability to get up. If your pet shows any of these signs and you think they are experiencing overheating, take their temperature. If it is above 105 degrees Fahrenheit, cool them down immediately and or take them to the vet.

Following the tips listed above will help keep you and your furry friends safe this summer as Savannah continues to ramp up the heat!
