A bride has faced some backlash after sharing several ‘controversial’ rules. One of which included requesting her bridesmaids at her wedding to pay for their own dresses.

Bride Emerson Schiavone regularly shares ideas about her thoughts on weddings. She describes her page as an unofficial ‘bridal guide’.

Emerson and her husband John, from New Jersey, US, tied the knot last year. They have extensively detailed their big day on social media.

In a recent TikTok video, Emerson shared her ‘unpopular’ opinions on the role her bridesmaids played at her wedding – and what was expected of them. She explained that one expectation was that every bridesmaid would pay for their own dress and shoes.

But that’s not all, Emerson also expected them to make a financial contribution to her bridal shower. She also dictated the colour of their nails on the day.

Emerson’s ‘controversial’ rules for bridesmaids:

  • Buying your own shoes and gown – She wrote: “I chose not to be responsible to pay for their attire other than accessories.”
  • Makeup and hair was up to them but had to be approved – Emerson said: “A bright red lip would look funny next to more natural makeup, in my opinion.”
  • Nails could not be any bright colour for photos – She said: “Seems crazy but bright pink nails will stick out in photos.”
  • Bridal shower contribution – Emerson explained: “My parents paid but if girls were able to contribute, they were asked a certain amount. Anyone who is mad about it… it’s literally common.”
  • Dress needs to be ordered four to six months ahead – “Not my fault if you are late and the dress does not come,” she said.
  • Only nude or clear heels – She explained: “I chose the colours to make sure they matched the gown colour.”

All gowns had to be the same colour and fabric, but could be different styles Emerson added. “I wanted my girls to feel comfortable in their gowns but needed them all to match.”

Emerson’s video is just one of many she’s detailed about her wedding. The ‘controversial’ bridesmaids rules video has already been viewed more than 100k times.

In the comment section, some people agreed with Emerson’s rules, with other brides and bridesmaids were divided. Alana Horrigan wrote: “I think shoes, gown and accessories should be brought by the bride.”
