Charlie was married to his first wife Mary O’Connor for 24 years and they share two adult children.

The pair continued to have a very amicable friendship, with Charlie describing them as “parents of the modern age”.
He previously said: “Today, I am better mates with the mother of my two children.

“We are parents of a modern age; our children are important to us and so we all meet as a family… we meet on family occasions, birthdays, we meet and we celebrate and on Christmas Day we will all meet for Christmas drinks”.

In 2016, Charlie tied the knot with his long-term partner Claire Mould – a former RTE colleague 20 years his junior.
Some 75 guests attended the intimate Humanist ceremony at Fitzwilliam Place in Dublin, including Charlie’s two children and three grandchildren as they posed happily for pictures afterward along the canal.

The couple had already been together for ten years before they married, and it seems they have been blissfully in love ever since.

“I don’t know about anyone else – we are absolutely so happy. In the ten years we have been together, we have never had a raised word”, he said one year after their wedding.

“What’s right is what is right. If it feels right, then do it. We were constantly together and not one cross word between us”.
Charlie admits he previously “hated dogs” before his wife Claire finally convinced him to adopt a young cockapoo after their wedding in 2016. But it wasn’t long before Tiger worked his magic and won the RTE legend over.

“I hated dogs. I could not stand them, and my wife Claire campaigned for so long because she was a dog person and she wanted a dog,” Charlie admitted at the time.

“In the end I gave in and now I love this animal, I just love him to bits. He makes me so happy. I understand for the first time, I really do, about dogs.”
