Ghaziabad couple organises destination wedding at Shamshan ghat in Uttarakhand, sparks outrage

A destination wedding held at a riverside cremation site in Uttarakhand’s Almora district has sparked widespread outrage.

The ghat, traditionally meant for last rites, was decorated by a couple from Ghaziabad for their wedding ceremonies, including the exchange of garlands. Around 50 guests were present, and loud music was played near the area, which lies close to a national park.

Images and videos from the event quickly spread on social media, drawing sharp backlash from locals and social groups, who termed it insensitive and disrespectful to cultural traditions. Social activist Narayan Singh Rawat stressed that cremation grounds hold deep spiritual significance and are inappropriate for celebratory events.

Officials also noted that Uttarakhand’s rising popularity as a destination wedding hotspot, along with the absence of clear guidelines, could lead to similar controversies in the future.

The incident has once again highlighted the need to strike a balance between promoting tourism and respecting local customs and sentiments.
