One of Meghan Markle’s former co-stars has revealed there was a “foul” smell when the Duchess of Sussex married Prince Harry nearly six years ago. Rick Hoffman, 53, has now come clean about his viral expression after he was caught on camera with what he described as an “awful face”.
The American actor, who worked alongside Meghan as he played Louis Litt on Suits, said he could smell “something really terrible and foul” so he covered his face at the Royal wedding at Windsor Castle back in May 2018. He made the comments while appearing on an episode of the “Chicks in the Office” podcast on Wednesday and explained the reason why his face seemed “goofy”. His expression went viral online shortly after the ceremony.
Explaining what happened, he said on the podcast: “As time goes on, I’m starting to smell something really terrible and foul, and I’m very sensitive when it comes to that so I start to try to do this. Because I have a coconut vanilla moisturizer, and I like to try to cut it. How can I help getting away from this goofy face?”

Before detecting the “foul” smell, Mr Hoffman was sitting next to another Suits actor, Sarah Rafferty, who plays Donna in the series. He said he likes to “mess around” with her and was doing “something ridiculous” before she told him to “cut it out”.
He shared that after noticing the bad smell, he went back to his friends from Suits and asked if they could smell it too, but they said no. He explained: “I don’t want them to think it’s me because I’m so particular when it comes to hygiene. So I’m like, ‘Do you guys smell that?’ And they’re like, ‘No.’ So now I’m, like, literally by myself and I’m just going, ‘Mother…’ And that’s what they got [on camera].”
He also mentioned that Meghan was aware of how much he cared about cleanliness. He added: “Guess who knew that the most in the cast that I had an issue with other people’s hygiene? Meghan! Always knew and would always laugh about how I was so sensitive.”
He talked about the Suits team getting back together for a new advert that was shown during the Super Bowl. Gina Torres, Rick Hoffman, and Sarah Rafferty were in the commercial for e.lf. Cosmetics, but Meghan wasn’t there. The ad, directed by Zach Woods, featured the Suits lawyers in Judge Judy’s courtroom.
Rick also spoke about meeting the famous Judge Judy and how he was a bit overwhelmed. He admitted: “I made a fool of myself. I literally became starstruck just because for years, I grew up watching her. And then ultimately, I was like, ‘I have to ask her to make a video for my mum’.”
Meghan Markle has been confirmed not to make an appearance in the upcoming spin-off series of Suits. Aaron Korsh, who crafted the original successful legal drama, has penned another series set in a Hollywood law firm. The character, Erica, seemed tailor-made for Meghan, but it looks like the Duchess of Sussex isn’t prepared to return to acting yet.
People close to the project say Meghan rebuffed the opportunity to reprise her role but proposed that her production company, Archewell, could contribute behind the scenes. However, NBC is said to have dismissed this offer. “Meghan was clear that she didn’t want to be involved as an actor. But Archewell was trying to wiggle its way in as a production company on the spin-off. NBC have killed that idea,” an insider told the Daily Mail. Other sources informed the outlet that Archewell would never have become involved in a reboot.
