A dispute over the cause of the 2024 capsizing of the superyacht Bayesian continues, as documented by The Maritime Executive. Three crew members are under investigation by Italian authorities in connection with the sinking, which resulted in the deaths of tech billionaire Mike Lynch, his teenage daughter, and five other people.
A report commissioned by Italian prosecutors attributed the disaster to crewmember error. According to the report, the weather at the time was deemed to be a manageable squall, and the sinking was caused by improper actions by the crew, including an underestimation of the weather and safety devices not being activated properly.
In contrast, the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch reached a different conclusion. Its analysis, conducted by the University of Southampton’s Wolfson Unit for Marine Technology, found that a gusting wind speed exceeding 63 knots blowing directly onto the yacht’s beam would likely cause a knockdown and capsizing. The MAIB determined that the risks of operating in the vessel’s specific stability configuration in high winds were not identified in the stability information book carried on board, meaning those vulnerabilities were unknown to both the owner and the crew.
At the time of the incident in the early hours of August 19, 2024, the Bayesian was anchored off Porticello, Sicily. The vessel’s centerboard was raised and its sails were furled, which was reportedly compliant with the stability booklet. Winds strengthened to 30 knots by 0355, and the yacht capsized suddenly to starboard at 0406 before sinking. The master, James Cutfield, and crew members Tim Eaton and Matthew Griffith are part of the inquiry in Sicily and could face manslaughter charges.
