  • Do YOU know who owns the £60million superyacht? Email tips@dailymail.com

The mystery owner of the £60million superyacht which has moored up next to the Sandbanks peninsular is believed to be a Hong Kong billionaire with a taste for John Lennon songs and Charlie Chaplin films.

Tongues have been wagging among the uber-rich residents of Sandbanks in Dorset over the identity of the owner of the newly-built vessel ever since it arrived this week.

But MailOnline can reveal that the 213-ft long yacht called Promise.D, which has a sheltered foredeck, a helipad, underwater lights, a gym and fold-down beach club has a sister yacht Promise, built in 2018.

Both yachts which look strikingly similar were constructed by the same prestigious Dutch shipbuilder Feadship which boasts: ‘We don’t build yachts quickly, we build them perfectly.’

Reports have suggested that the 167ft Promise is owned by a Hong Kong billionaire who works in the finance industry, although their exact identity remains a secret.

The fact that the steel-hulled Promise.D, with her teak decks and aluminium superstructure, has a similar design and name to the yacht Promise and was built in the same shipyard suggests that the owner may be the same person.

Both yachts are registered in the secretive Cayman Islands tax haven, entitling them to fly under the Red Ensign which gives them the protection of the Royal Navy on the high seas.

They are both Ice Class yachts designed to withstand the toughest environments including the Polar Regions where they are able to navigate through sea ice, suggesting the owner likes to explore remote places, rather than just relaxing in tropical havens.

The interior of both vessels was also conceived by the same UK superyacht design firm, Bannenberg & Rowell, which states that it offers ‘a uniquely bespoke and intimate experience’ to clients.

Fascinating details about the tastes of the owner of Promise are revealed in pictures of the yacht’s luxurious interior on the Bannenberg & Rowell website.

The pictures show the spacious, but understated interior of the Promise, fitted out with mainly cream soft furnishings with colourful cushions, and cream carpets over polished wooden floors.

But the pictures also reveal a tantalising glimpse into the musical preferences of the owner by showing built in cupboards with the lyrics to the John Lennon hit Imagine emblazoned across three doors.

The late former Beatle’s lyrics which begin with the words, ‘Imagine there’s no heaven, it’s easy if you try, no hell below us, above us only sky’ are cut right through the doors, allowing the lights inside the cupboard to shine through.

Other items in the pictures give an indication of the owner’s literary leanings, with a copy of the long forgotten book Fish Are Such Liars, written in 1928 by Roland Pertwee, the father of former Dr Who star Jon Pertwee, visible on a table.

A coffee table centred around plush sofas and armchairs beside a cosy built in fireplace and built-in big screen TV, also has an array of books including the hardback Charlie Chaplin Archives, edited by Paul Duncan.

The Red Ensign group, which is the umbrella organisation for vessels registered in the UK, Crown Dependencies or UK Overseas Territories including the Cayman Islands, could not comment on the identity of the owner of the Promise.D.

Instead, a spokesperson referred MailOnline to the Cayman Islands Shipping Registry which did not respond to requests for comment.

Ship tracker records show that the Promise is currently moored in Hong Kong.

The superyacht bible Boat International described the building of the Promise.D as ‘highly secretive’ in an operation formerly known as Project Capri.

At one stage, the vessel was seen being transported by tugs through the Dutch canals, from Feadship’s Koninklijke De Vries facility in Aalsmeer to Rotterdam.

The vessel is due to stay in Poole Harbour for a week before departing on February 27, but it is not known where its next destination will be.

Poole Quay Boat Haven, which handle bookings at the glitzy Poole Harbour marina, also said it could not disclose the identity of the owner.

Poole Harbour which is the largest natural harbour in Europe at 28sq kms, and the second-largest in the world after Sydney, has become a popular destination for superyachts in recent years.

There are 1.25 million tons of cargo, 400,000 passengers and over 5,000 commercial shipping movements in the harbour every year.

The well-heeled Sandbanks peninsula at its entrance has many famous residents including former football managers Harry Redknapp and Graeme Souness and the computer magnate Sir Peter Ogden.

Harbour master Captain Brian Murphy said in 2022: ‘This is very much a growth market and Poole Harbour is fast becoming the UK’s number one destination for superyachts.

‘It is great news for the local economy with all of the superyachts using local shops for storing of provisions and essential items and local marine repair companies for any maintenance requirements.

‘In recent years, as part of decarbonisation, we have introduced shore power facilities for superyachts.’
