On December 12, the day before it was publicly announced global race series SailGP would return to Lyttelton Harbour/Whakaraupō, the Department of Conservation briefed its new minister.
The memo (written by eastern South Island operations director Jo Macpherson, and Henry Weston, the deputy director-general of operations, to the National Party’s Tama Potaka) detailed how Auckland’s unsuitability for hosting the event was a boon for Ōtautahi/Christchurch, which hosted the event in 2023.
