Five years after the brand’s creative director Hedi Slimane reintroduced fragrance to the world of Celine, the French fashion house has announced the creation of Celine Beauté, the first cosmetics offering in the house’s nearly 80-year history.
Celine teased the line in a short fashion film for winter 2024 that also introduces the fashion range called ’La Collection de L’Art de Triomphe”. It said the fashion range was inspired by founder Céline Vipiana’s creation of the brand’s monogram in 1971, when she referenced a chain link she noticed circling Paris’s Arc de Triomphe.
Accompanying the clip on the brand’s social media were some tantalising details about the new range.
“’La Collection de L’Art de Triomphe’ film marks the birth of Celine Beauté,” it shared, detailing that models in the video wear “La Peau Nue” Rose Naturel lipstick. It is one of 15 shades in an upcoming “Le Rouge Celine” lipstick collection. While it revealed that full collection won’t be available until next year, Celine Beauté will launch in the northern hemisphere’s autumn 2024 with one shade, it called “Rouge Triomphe.”
An image shows a bold red lipstick engraved with the house’s monogram, encased in gold packaging.
“The creation of Celine Beauté comes to enrich the cultural roots, promoting a French idea of femininity and allure, distilled over the last five years by Hedi Slimane in his new institutional codes for the Maison Celine,” the house said in the statement.
It said the lipsticks will have a unique satin-finish texture with a ‘sensorial signature that connects with Hedi Slimane’s obsession with haute couture fabrics’.
“The enveloping sensation of a light creamy formula that sheathes and structures comfortably the lips with colour,” the statement shared, saying the lipstick’s finish will be hydrating and long wearing and come delicately scented with notes of rose and rice powder.
It revealed the lipsticks are only the beginning of its push into the beauty category, with new colour cosmetics collections designed by Hedi Slimane to be launched by the brand each season.
Lip balms, mascaras, eyeliners, eye pencils, loose powders and nail polishes were products mentioned to be expected in those future releases.
Celine follows a boom of luxury fashion brands extending into the beauty area. Most recently fellow French brand Balmain signed a new deal to create its own beauty line, through a new license with Estée Lauder Companies. In recent years Gucci, Valentino, Rabanne and Hermès have all created cosmetics ranges.
