The Superyacht Cup Palma Richard Mille Marks 30 Years

by R.Donald

The Superyacht Cup Palma Richard Mille gets underway on June 24, and with it a significant celebration. This week is the 30th anniversary of the regatta, with one of the largest list of competitors to date.

As the longest-running superyacht-specific race in Europe, the regatta has earned a reputation for spirited competition and relaxed, owner-oriented hospitality. The Bay of Palma, for instance, has a well-earned reputation for providing good sailing conditions for the racecourse. Similarly, race organizers have welcomed new yachts and new classes while preserving its best traditions.

Several competitors are returning racers. The J-Class yachts Rainbow and Svea (above, background) are among them. They’ll go head-to-head, in fact, in their own class. Further making their return, this time in the superyacht classes, are multiple yachts. The two-time champion Win Win, a Baltic, is one of them. So, too, are the Oyster Archelon, the Vitters Cervo, and the Claasen Atalante 1. Notably, Atalanta 1 is racing under new ownership.

Speaking of new, several yachts are making their debut at The Superyacht Cup Palma Richard Mille. Namely, they’re the Perini Navi Burrasca, the Wally Inco, and the Nautor Swan yachts Point Counter Point and Spiip. Furthermore, for the first time, the regatta is including a YYachts racing division. Six of these carbon fiber yachts, which prioritize speed, are competing. Three are Tripp Design deliveries: Lucid, Distancia, and Bella. The remaining are the Judel/Vrolijk Beati, the Brenta Makai, and the Surg- Projects Calabash. In contrast to the two-minute space between starts in the superyacht classes, the YYachts will have only 60 seconds.

Since June 24 is the captains’ briefing and welcome party, racing begins on June 25. From that day through the 27th, Wajer Yachts is providing two of its powerboats as a viewing platform close to the action.

“We are beyond delighted to be able to welcome so many entries to our 30th anniversary,” Kate Branagh, the regatta owner and director, says. “And with a new Regatta Village layout thanks to our Venue Partner Club de Mar-Mallorca, we will have all the boats together again, stern-to next to the main event tent.” Ultimately, Branagh continues, “it’s a recreation of the atmosphere and the great dockside party vibe of our past.”
