The proliferation of the horseshoe whip snake throughout the Balearic Islands now ranks among the gravest dangers to the archipelago’s native wildlife. Accidentally brought in from mainland Spain concealed within ornamental olive trees, this invasive reptile has taken over large portions of Ibiza and Formentera, causing a steep drop in indigenous lizard numbers, including several subspecies found nowhere else on Earth.
Specialists caution that this snake functions as a top predator in an environment where it encounters almost no natural enemies. Its expansion has occurred so quickly that the Pityusan wall lizard has already vanished from multiple small islands, and snakes have been observed swimming between landmasses to locate fresh prey.
Nevertheless, the snake’s appearance in the Balearics was not a random event. Its narrative started over twenty years ago and, based on multiple research papers, is intimately tied to the commerce of sizable decorative olive trees shipped from the mainland. The initial detection of a horseshoe whip snake on Ibiza and anywhere in the Balearics took place in 2003. Previously, this species existed solely in North Africa, the Iberian Peninsula, and certain areas of Sardinia.
The Balearic administration did not take this ecological menace seriously until seven years afterward, when initial investigations verified that the snake had occupied much of the main Pityusan island. By the moment the invasive serpent had reached Mallorca in 2006 and Formentera in 2010, the region’s biodiversity department had already identified a probable source. A study mentioned that inhabitants of Capdepera associated the delivery of Iberian olive trees with the snake’s arrival, a theory that seemed credible because all three species are prevalent in the region where the olive trees come from. The same study highlighted a notable rise in the importation of large trees intended for landscaping over the preceding two decades.
Rather than planting local olive trees and waiting for them to mature, property owners and their landscaping contractors opted to transport fully developed trees from the mainland, carrying reptiles along with them. The regional government specifically named a gardening firm in Sant Llorenc de Balafia, Ibiza, where horseshoe whip snakes were documented among its shipments on two separate instances. Some environmental groups also faulted the authorities’ own initiatives to reintroduce certain areas with non-native tree species.
Since that time, the snake has achieved a sequence of landmarks in its takeover of the archipelago. Ninety percent of Ibiza is now inhabited by horseshoe snakes, which pose no danger to people but are regarded as a dominant predator for other fauna, since they encounter no rivals in the Balearic food web. Their diet includes small mammals and other snakes, but they focus especially on Pityusan wall lizards, a species classified as vulnerable that exists only on Ibiza, Formentera, and the adjacent islets.
In 2024, a horseshoe whip snake was captured on video for the first time swimming across the Balearic Sea in pursuit of additional sustenance. Researchers from the Centre for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications have confirmed that the lizard species Podarcis pityusensis has gone extinct on roughly ten islets, including Santa Eularia, where they recorded the snake moving between islands. Each islet also hosts its own unique subspecies with distinct color patterns. The lizards, locally called sargantanas, perform a crucial function in preserving the islands’ ecological equilibrium by regulating insect populations, spreading seeds, and aiding in plant pollination.
Steps taken three years ago by the regional government to limit specific tree imports during the period when snake eggs hatch have arrived far too late. Attempts to trap the snakes—approximately 12,000 have been caught since 2016, per official data—are proving equally ineffective against a species that appears to be a permanent resident. The horseshoe whip snake is not the sole snake introduced to the Mediterranean islands; the ladder snake, the viperine snake, and the Montpellier snake also inhabit their coasts and mountain ranges. However, the only Spanish snakes venomous to humans—the asp viper, the nose-horned viper, and the Cantabrian viper—have not yet made it to Balearic territory.
