Xiaomi will soon enter the crowded EREV market with a new sub-brand called Sky Nomad. The most interesting model of the new brand is a six-seater SUV equipped with a built-in roof tent. This might be the camper everyone wants, but unfortunately, it will be a China-exclusive model for the foreseeable future.
Americans have been fascinated with campers, seeing them as a symbol of freedom. Not only camper vans have proven popular, but also custom versions based on pickup trucks and SUVs. Heck, even bolting a roof tent onto a sedan has been tried, and they all attracted a lot of attention. While these have been fairly popular in North America, Chinese customers did not appear interested.
This might change soon, as Xiaomi prepares to launch its adventure-oriented sub-brand Sky Nomad, positioned slightly below the main Xiaomi EV brand. Sky Nomad cars will also feature gas-powered range extenders, a powertrain solution highly popular in China. The Sky Nomad brand will expand a host of adventure-oriented models. The first model under the new brand will be a six-seater SUV with a unique feature: a built-in roof tent.
We’ve already seen prototypes of the Sky Nomad SUV, which looked like a Range Rover. Now, we have the first pictures of a prototype spotted in China showcasing the pop-top camper SUV. This justifies the brand’s Chinese name “Xun Tian,” which translates as “looking for the sky.” The pictures show a beige tent with a black mosquito net. The tall structure would allow passengers to both stand up in the cabin and set a mattress at the roof level.
The N90 pop-top SUV will cater to the “glamping” crowd in China, providing something extra compared to the usual car equipped with AC sockets and a kitchenette. Many rivals offer fold-flat seats, and I don’t expect the Sky Nomad N90 EREV to fall short in this area. The tall cabin and extended accommodation capabilities could make the N90 pop-top a best seller.
The indicative N90 reflects the position as the top-of-the-line model in Sky Nomad’s lineup. Other “9 Series” SUVs competing with Xiaomi’s model are SAIC’s IM LS9, Denza’s N9, and Li Auto’s L9. Expect a length of over 5,300 mm (208.7 in), with an expected wheelbase of 3,100 mm (122 in).
As Xiaomi’s first extended-range EV, the Sky Nomad N90 will be powered by a battery pack with a capacity of 70 kWh or more. A 1.5-liter turbo engine will help when the battery depletes, extending the CLTC range from the all-electric 400-500 km (250-310 mi) to over 1,500 km (930 mi) overall.
According to a CarNewsChina report, the battery suppliers will be Sunwoda, with about 60% of the supply chain, and CALB, for the remaining 40%. Xiaomi traditionally relied on CATL and BYD as battery suppliers for the SU7 and YU7 EVs. This reflects the value position of the new brand in Xiaomi’s portfolio.
