Ball python in Southbury was in danger of being roadkill: Official

by R.Donald

SOUTHBURY — A ball python found outside a Southbury movie theater Wednesday was in danger of being squashed in the road, an official said.

Animal Control Officer Kristin Cedor said she was dispatched to the Riverview Cinemas on Main Street South in the afternoon and found when she arrived that someone had contained the constrictor in a cardboard box.

The snake appeared to be healthy, Cedor said, and she has reached out to an animal rehabilitation center for assistance.

The snake appeared to be headed onto the busy street when it was found, Cedor said. She said she is investigating whether the medium-sized snake escaped or was dumped. Anyone with information is asked to call Southbury Animal Control at 203-262-0613.

Ball pythons, which are 3-5 feet long on average, are so named for their tendency to roll into a ball when threatened, according to a description on the Beardsley Zoo website. Native to central and western Africa, the snakes are popular pets in the U.S. and can live more than 30 years in captivity, according to the Bridgeport zoo’s description.
