Rivian Automotive Inc. is suing the U.S. government for a refund of the tariffs it paid during President Trump’s wave of taxes on imported goods from 2025, TechCrunch reported on Friday.
The Irvine electric vehicle maker filed a lawsuit on July 23 against the U.S. government, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the organization’s commissioner Rodney Scott.
CBP was responsible for collecting the tariffs on behalf of the Trump administration; the tariffs were later invalidated by the Supreme Court, according to the court filing.
CBP told TechCrunch that over $121 billion in both “potential and certified refunds have been accepted for processing” as many companies have sued for refunds since late 2025.
Rivian shares fell 3.8% to $15.84 apiece during midday trading on Friday with a market cap of $23 billion (Nasdaq: RIVN).
