At the veterinary clinic of the Abandoned Pet Rescue shelter in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, a true queen rules the roost. Her name is Columbia. Usually curled up on the heating pad reserved for IV bags, this green-eyed tabby cat keeps a close eye on the veterinary staff as they work.
Yet, life wasn’t always this comfortable for Columbia, and no one would have guessed she would end up spending her days in a vet clinic.
Anxious and in pain
As a shy little cat, Columbia used to spend all her time hiding under a cat bed, terrified of the outside world. Consumed by anxiety, she would scratch herself so badly that she caused severe self-inflicted wounds.
When she was first rescued, she had to undergo eyelid surgery and was declawed to stop her from scratching herself. She was also diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. This is a rare genetic condition that makes the skin abnormally stretchy, fragile and prone to tearing.
A miraculous transformation
Following a strict medical treatment plan, her recovery has been nothing short of spectacular. Columbia no longer has any skin lesions, has been able to stop all her medication, and is now in perfect health.
