A new European defense partnership could reshape how two NATO allies refuel, transport and support advanced fighter aircraft.
Spain has approved the joint procurement with Poland of at least seven Airbus A330 MRTT multirole tanker aircraft. The purchase is planned under the European SAFE defence programme.
Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced the Spanish government’s decision on X. Once approval has been obtained, the parties are expected to conclude the final agreement.
Yesterday, the Spanish government approved the procurement of at least seven Airbus A330 MRTT tanker and transport aircraft jointly with Poland under the SAFE programme. The next step will be the signing of the final agreement.

Poland plans to receive four Airbus A330 MRTTs
Poland expects to receive four Airbus A330 MRTT aircraft by 2030. They are intended to expand the capabilities of the Polish Air Force, which is preparing to bring F-35 fighter jets into service.
This is essential equipment for our Air Force, which is in the process of introducing F-35 aircraft into service.

Capabilities of the Airbus A330 MRTT
The Airbus A330 MRTT is a multirole tanker and transport aircraft. It can refuel combat aircraft in mid-air, carry out strategic transport missions for personnel and cargo, and be used for medical evacuation.
The procurement of these aircraft is expected to provide Poland and Spain with additional capabilities for carrying out defence and transport tasks within NATO.
