Today, Jarcorp Interactive announced its new game Amphibian, an RPG set in a fantasy world inhabited by bipedal, talking frogs. A reveal trailer debuted at Future Games Show Live From Gamescom showed off some of the turn-based combat as well as a look at what kind adventure the game will be.
Amphibian’s story centers around generational violence, loss, and betrayal between two warring factions: frogs and toads. There’s a detail-rich, 2D pixel art world to explore with a variety of enemies such as beasts, insects, and even fellow amphibians. The characters grow using a branching class system, so no two playthroughs will necessarily have the same outcome, and some heroes may even become lost in combat. According to its Steam page, the game is described as a “socio-political narrative about one family, their sacrifices, and the irreparable harm caused by generations of violence,” setting a somber tone for the story.
One of the key features of Amphibian is that there is no grinding or in-game economy; the game’s encounters are meticulously paced so that players must carefully manage their resources, hunt for secrets, and maintain their party’s health since every hitpoint matters. There are also no random encounters; instead, every battle is intentionally curated. With limited side content, Amphibian boasts a forward-driving campaign in which every single detail serves a purpose in the story.
