NEED TO KNOW

  • Judy Greer recently reminisced on her time filming The Wedding Planner alongside Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey

  • The 50-year-old actress shared a personal story from early in production when McConaughey quietly helped her out of a stressful situation

  • As the film celebrates its 25th anniversary, Greer revealed whether she’d be open to revisiting her role as the ditzy assistant, Penny Nicholson

Before she became a familiar face in countless comedies and dramas, Judy Greer was still finding her footing in Hollywood. One of her early roles came in the 2001 romantic comedy, The Wedding Planner, led by Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey.

Though Greer had a supporting role, the experience clearly left a lasting impression. Looking back years later, she fondly recalled the atmosphere on set — especially when it came to McConaughey.

“The thing I remember about that movie was how lovely [he] was. I loved seeing him in hair and makeup every morning, ’cause he had, like, pajamas on and a Yerba Mate,” Greer told Entertainment Tonight. “I haven’t worked with him since, but I have a feeling not much has changed.”

While Greer already had some acting experience under her belt at the time, she still recalled being “so broke” that she couldn’t get her car out of a valet service her first time meeting the cast.

Thankfully, however, McConaughey was there to save the day.

“Before we started shooting, we did a table read, and we did it at the Roosevelt Hotel [in New York City], and I valeted my car,” she told the outlet. “I didn’t know any better.”

However, when she went to get her car at the end of the day, she “didn’t have enough money.”

Realizing she couldn’t pay for valet, she frantically called her friend, Sean Gunn, from a pay phone in the lobby for help.

“Matthew McConaughey overheard me and gave me $20,” she recalled, laughing. “I was so mortified, but also, like, ‘My hero.’ ”

As The Wedding Planner celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, Greer notes that, at the time, she “didn’t understand what a big deal it would be.”

She also shared her thoughts on the possibility of revisiting the film. Although she admitted to being open to the idea, she did acknowledge that the original still holds up on its own.

“Yes, because I love it, and I think it’d be fun to see what people do with it, but also, like, it’s great,” Greer told Entertainment Tonight. “Why do we have to keep rebooting everything?”

Nevertheless, she told the outlet that she is up for a reboot “as long as I get to be in it.”
