At this year’s Auto China show, international carmakers are rolling out models built specifically for the local market and stepping up research and development in an effort to match the speed and sophistication of Chinese domestic competitors, according to a report from the South China Morning Post.
During the event, which runs through Sunday, Beijing Hyundai Motor president Li Fenggang surprised attendees at the close of his presentation by asking them to lift LED boxes placed on their seats. He said the light from the devices would mark the start of Hyundai’s new journey in China. The boxes carried the logo of Ioniq, a new brand the Korean carmaker has just introduced in mainland China.
Li stated that after several years of weak performance in the country, Hyundai is preparing to regain lost ground by using local technologies to develop a new generation of electric vehicles designed for Chinese customers.
Hyundai, the world’s third-largest carmaker by deliveries, took the spotlight on April 24, the first day of the Beijing show, which has become the world’s largest car exhibition.
The Korean manufacturer is one of several international marques trying to counter the rise of home-grown rivals. Together with its Chinese partner BAIC Group, Hyundai has committed an additional 8 billion yuan (US$1.17 billion) to their joint venture, Beijing Hyundai.
At the show, Hyundai is displaying its first production model under the new brand: the Ioniq V electric sedan. It is one of 20 models the carmaker plans to design and build for the Chinese market over the next five years.
