A young jeweller from Yell has overcome a debilitating pain condition to make her dream come true with the opening of a new shop in Lerwick.

Connie Laureen Dickie’s new business has opened in Commercial Street today (Saturday) following a launch event last night.

Speaking to The Shetland Times back in April, when preparations were under way, Connie said she had recently recently been diagnosed with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) a chronic, often debilitating medical condition.

However, she refused to let the pain get in the way and followed her dreams to become a jewellery.

The 22-year-old also explained how she had become inspired to make jewellery after her grandfather made her a silver smithing workbench during the pandemic.

Starting with bespoke pieces, made from locally foraged sea glass, Connie honed her skills over the summer and began selling her work at events such as the Tall Ships Races Lerwick 2023 – and even to international buyer.

She said the response had been “really crazy”.

Living Lerwick’s project manager Emma Miller attended last night’s launch and has wished Connie well in her new venture.

“We were delighted to be invited to the launch of Connie Laureen’s new shop last night ahead of the opening day today,” she said.

“It looks stunning.

“Pop along today and check out the beautifully designed jewellery.

“Wishing you all the best with the new business Connie.”

The jewellery available in the shop has all been uniquely designed, with many of them featuring topaz and gemstones.

Connie is also hoping to start offering gold plating services.
