Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez’s story began during a chance encounter behind a store counter.
The two first crossed paths when the World Cup star entered a Gucci store in Madrid where Rodríguez, now an influencer and model, was working as a sales clerk, they recalled in the Netflix reality series, “I Am Georgina.”
In August 2025, about nine years after their meet-cute, the couple announced the next step in their love story on Rodríguez’s Instagram: An engagement.
The post’s focal point was the jaw-dropping oval sparkler on display, a ring jewelers estimate could cost up to $5 million.
While Rodriguez has joked that the diamond was the “least (Ronaldo) could offer” after nearly a decade of waiting, per Elle Spain, it took the model a “long time to process” the size of the stone. She didn’t even look at it in sunlight until the next day, she told the magazine.
Ronaldo is currently playing for Portugul’s national team in the World Cup and is a forward for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League.
Here’s what to know about the engagement ring, according to jewelry experts.
The Oval-Cut Diamond Is an Estimated 30+ Carats
The sheer size of the diamond sets the ring apart. Per photo-based estimates, the center stone is likely between 30 to 35 carats, Calista West, founder and jewelery designer at Calista West, tells TODAY.com.
West emphasizes the rarity of the rock: “Most consumers will never encounter a diamond of this size in person, and stones of this caliber typically move through elite dealer networks, important private collections, or major high end jewelry houses.”
Other experts put the size even higher. Jewelry blogger and influencer Tracey Ellison, known as The Diamonds Girl on social media, estimates the ring is around 37 carats.
“Georgina is known for her love of jewelry so it makes sense that their commitment to one another would be marked by a large natural diamond,” she tells TODAY.com.
More Auction House Than Engagement Ring
Even the most upscale engagement rings rarely exceed five carats, and once a ring surpasses 15 carats, “you’re operating in an entirely different universe of rarity and value,” West says.
“Natural diamonds of this size are no longer simply engagement ring diamonds,” she says. “They begin to resemble the type of exceptional stones you might expect to encounter at a major auction house, within an important private collection, or as part of a high jewelry masterpiece.”
To West, that rarity signifies more than glitz and glamour — it sends a message about Ronaldo’s intentions.
“Diamonds at this level are exceptionally rare, and choosing one is often less about fashion and more about legacy. When clients pursue a stone of this caliber, they’re typically investing in something that will become an enduring part of a family’s story,” she says.
It Likely Costs Millions
Although jewelers agree that they’d need more details to pin down a precise price, their estimates range from $2 million to $5 million, per West, Ellison and Cameron Malakan, owner of Clairamor.
If the diamond is natural and as high-quality as it appears, Malakan estimates it could cost between $3 million and $5 million, he tells TODAY.com.
Although, he adds, that estimate could increase depending on the center stone’s color, clarity and cut quality.
Plus, Malakan adds, the price “becomes exponentially more expensive” for a diamond of this size, as “the supply of stones in this range just doesn’t exist.”
West affirms that she would expect the ring to “comfortably fall” within the $3 to 5 million dollar range if the center stone is natural and her carat estimates are correct.
Although, she adds, it “would not surprise her” if the ring cost between $4 and $5 million, and “truly exceptional characteristics could push that figure considerably higher.”
Carat weight isn’t the sole driving factor in value for a stone in this category, she clarifies. For a diamond like this one, “a seemingly small difference in color or clarity can represent millions of dollars in value,” she says.
Ellison estimates that the ring could cost between $2 million to $5 million, depending on its color and clarity.
The Minimal Setting Makes an Oversized Statement
Ellison describes the setting’s dual purpose: “It’s secure enough to hold a diamond of that size, simple enough to let the stone be the centerpiece without distracting details.”
That balance is intentional. West describes the ring as a “classic three stone design,” which keeps the focus on the center diamond — even with two side stones that are likely one carat each.
From the double-claw style prongs to the platinum setting, Ronaldo set the ring for longevity, according to Malakan.
Still, the simplicity of the design doesn’t make it any less striking: “The size of the stone is comparable to that of royals of the past,” he adds. “To me, this engagement ring is a true statement piece, showcasing a once-in-a-lifetime stone.”
