The 9 Best Jones Road Products, Tested by InStyle

by R.Donald

Bestsellers: The legendary Bobbi Brown created a line of makeup and skin care that is simple to use and multi-purpose. Highlights of the line are Miracle Balm and Just Enough Tinted Moisturizer.

Mature Skin-Approved: Women over 40 appreciate the hydrating formula and buildable coverage of What the Foundation.

Dual-Purpose: Products that are good at more than one thing were a hit with our testers, like The Face Pencil.

While there will always be a time and place for full-coverage foundations, glittery eyeshadows, and bold red lipsticks, a natural, glowy look is gorgeous for everyday wear. Luckily, famed makeup artist and entrepreneur Bobbi Brown launched Jones Road for those who want fresh-looking skin and a natural flush—without appearing like they applied makeup with a heavy hand.

Before diving into the collection, we polled InStyle editors and writers on their favorite Jones Road products. After narrowing the list and stocking up, we tested several Jones Road products over two weeks, evaluating each one on wear, finish, comfort, and longevity. We incorporated the brand’s hero skin-enhancing highlighting balm, lightweight tinted moisturizer, to-die-for lip tint, and other best sellers into our daily makeup routine. Let’s just say there were some clear winners.

Jones Road Beauty Miracle Balm

Why We Love It: The Miracle Balm is perhaps the most beloved and sought-after Jones Road product. The dewy product works as a highlighter, skin tint, moisturizer, and blush—all at once (hence its name). As a light-reflecting face balm, it adds just enough glow and color to make you look healthy and radiant. The balm’s skin-enhancing ingredients—like jojoba seed oil, argan oil, and vitamin E—keep the skin hydrated and nourished. Available in 13 shades, from rosy hues that give a warm glimmer to bronze shades that cast a golden glow, the face balm adds a natural-looking luminosity to the skin. Although InStyle’s former Associate Editor Claudia Willen was initially intimidated by the rose gold bronze shade (which Jones Road markets for all skin tones), she was blown away by how dewy and supple-looking it left her cool-toned skin.

Who It’s For: This balm best suits people with dry skin, as those with oily skin might find the buttery texture a little too decadent. That being said, dabbing the Miracle Balm on your skin is an excellent way to give yourself a little pick-me-up without packing on foundation or concealer.

Worth Noting: Although the formula is quite greasy, it’s noncomedogenic, so it won’t clog your pores.

Shades: 13 | Key Ingredients: Jojoba seed oil, vitamin E, argan oil | Size: 1.75 oz | Fragrance-Free: No

Claudia Willen, former associate editor: “The Miracle Balm gave me an appropriate amount of bronzed warmth, whether I used the formula on my bare skin or over foundation. There’s also so much product in the container that I felt like I was getting a bronzer, highlighter, and lip balm for the price of one item. The only thing I’d change about it would be the addition of SPF to the formula.”

Jones Road Beauty Just Enough Tinted Moisturizer

Why We Love It: With the long-awaited arrival of warm weather, you may be shedding your full-coverage, heavy foundation in favor of lighter formulas that even out skin and lightly cover blemishes, like Jones Road’s relatively new tinted moisturizer. The hero ingredient is sodium hyaluronate, a humectant that keeps skin hydrated and supple, restores its barrier, and soothes inflammation. InStyle’s Senior Beauty Editor Erika Reals says it blended well, leaving her with a natural-looking, dewy finish and paired well with a concealer when she needed fuller coverage.

Who It’s For: Anyone who needs a lightweight product that evens out their skin tone and enhances their skin’s natural look will like this tinted moisturizer. Thanks to its hydrating properties, it’s especially ideal for people with dry skin or fine lines who want a smoother, plumper-looking complexion.

Worth Noting: It doesn’t have SPF, so you have to apply sunscreen before or after using it.

Shades: 16 | Key Ingredients: Sodium hyaluronate, glycerin | Size: 1.69 oz | Fragrance-Free: No

Erika Reals, senior editor: “I never thought I’d replace my Ilia skin tint, but here I am eating my words. This tinted moisturizer does exactly what it says: giving ‘just enough’ coverage to help you look alive and presentable to the world. It blends in super seamlessly, and since it doubles as a moisturizer, I can skip that step in the morning.”

Jones Road Beauty What the Foundation

Credit: Jones Road

Why We Love It: This foundation melts like butter once it makes contact with the skin, feeling extremely hydrating and smooth. Rather than acting like a full-coverage foundation that masks all your blemishes, it works like a moisturizing tint, making your skin look even-toned and healthy. InStyle tester Anya appreciated the tub format, which makes it super easy to put the product to good use without feeling like you’re leaving anything behind. It took her a while to figure out exactly how much product to use for that sheer, healthy look.

Who It’s For: When you’re looking to give your natural complexion a little boost, or you’re going for a no-makeup makeup look, turn to this foundation.

Worth Noting: Anya found that the formula can feel a little sticky before it absorbs and needs a few moments to dry.

Shades: 16 | Key Ingredients: Sodium hyaluronate, capric triglyceride | Size: 1.14 oz | Fragrance-Free: No

Anya, tester with combination skin: “ I appreciate that the shade match is forgiving and that this might be a good option for a natural look.”

Jones Road Beauty The Face Pencil

Credit: Jones Road

Why We Love It: Jones Road’s The Face Pencil acts as a concealer for dark circles, blemishes, and discoloration. Unlike liquid concealers, this one goes on like a crayon. Since this product is so small and lightweight, it’s easy to keep in your pocket and use for touch-ups while you’re out and about. The precise pencil format makes targeting tight areas like around the eyes or nose super easy and painless, especially because the product can be blended out with your hands. InStyle tester Lee loved how it felt on her skin—she barely felt like she was wearing makeup.

Who It’s For: With 25 shades designed for yellow, reddish, and pink undertones, there’s a face pencil for all skin tones. Additionally, it’s an excellent concealer for oily skin since it can feel dry on bare skin.

Worth Noting: InStyle Senior Director Jessica Mahgerefteh said the formula felt slightly dry when she used it on its own.

Shades: 25 | Key Ingredients: Shea butter | Size: 0.1 oz | Fragrance-Free: No

Lee, tester with dry skin (not shown): “If you’re a minimalist with fairly evenly toned, hydrated skin and you want one complexion product, this is the one for you. It’s so precise, and no other tools or brushes are required besides your fingers. This is great for travel and on-the-go touch-ups!”

Jones Road The Mascara

Credit: Jones Road

Why We Love It: Most Jones Road products lean minimal, subtle, and natural, but its mascara is an exception. After pulling the wand out of its tube, you’ll notice the thick, bushy brush is generously coated in formula.  It lengthened and volumized our tester’s straight lashes instantly, thanks to the slight bend. One coat was enough for a natural look, but the mascara doesn’t dry down super fast, so you can easily layer on more for the falsie effect this mascara provides.

Who It’s For: This product is fantastic for anyone with short and thin lashes because of its dramatic effect.

Worth Noting: A lot of product comes out in one stroke, so you can fan out your lashes to soften any clumps.

Shades: 1 | Key Ingredients: Vitamin E, glycerin | Size: 0.51 oz | Fragrance-Free: Yes

Anya, tester: “I love the end result with all the volume and lift I got from this mascara! It’ll definitely be my go-to for the next few months as I use up this tube.”

Jones Road The Best Blush

Credit: Jones Road

Why We Love It: Pink blush is perfectly aligned with online makeup trends, and this powder formula offers a wearable entry point. It comes in five different pink tones—our tester Stephanie fell in love with the P.O.P. shade despite not having used a powder blush in ages. The product is super pigmented, and it adds a slight sparkle to wherever you apply it (yes, two-in-one product!). It’s so silky, it’s easy to build up to a vibrant pink flush depending on the look you’re going for. Thanks to the compact’s small mirror, you can apply it in a hurry or store it away in your suitcase while traveling.

Who It’s For: Anyone who wears powder blush will like this formula. Combination and oily skin types will appreciate the pop of pigment and nongreasy formula, while dry skin types may benefit from the squalane in it, which adds hydration back to the skin.

Worth Noting: A little goes a long way, so those with blush blindness should tread lightly.

Shades: 5 | Key Ingredients: Squalane | Size: 0.08 oz | Fragrance-Free: No

Stephanie, tester: “I love it for a great, bright burst of color. The finish of the product is soft and silky smooth—I don’t feel it at all!”

Jones Road The Lip Pencil

Credit: Jones Road

Why We Love It: Jones Road is all about using makeup to play up your natural features, and this lip pencil is the perfect addition to a barely there makeup look. It’s everything you need in a lip liner: pigmented, creamy, and hard to mess up. The shade range is also pretty impressive, with a wide variety of nudes and bright pops of color.

Who It’s For: Whether you gravitate toward a matte red lip or a clear gloss, this pencil will enhance your lip combo in one swipe. Erika appreciated how easy it was to apply and blend out, making this pencil a great candidate for beginners.

Worth Noting: The pencil’s two deep brown shades (Cognac and Chocolate) are lovely but may seem limiting for dark-skinned individuals seeking a natural-looking, nude lip pencil. There are plenty of pinks and “nudes,” but it would be great if Jones Road expanded its more pigmented shade range.

Shades: 12 | Key Ingredients: Castor oil, vitamin E, argan oil | Size: 0.03 oz | Fragrance-Free: No

Erika Reals, senior editor: “This pencil glides on super smoothly. I normally have to make some corrections when applying lip liner because my lines don’t look super straight or even, but that’s not the case when I use this one from Jones Road. Plus, it’s so highly pigmented, you won’t need to reline a second time for more definition.”

Jones Road Beauty Cool Gloss

Credit: Jones Road Beauty

Why We Love It: This lip gloss met most of our very high standards: it’s pigmented, ultra-shimmery, lightweight, and hydrating. On the initial application, our tester was met with a minty, cooling gloss that was butter soft—no stickiness or excessive globs in sight. The color payoff was the perfect balance between over the top and barely there; it enhanced our tester’s natural lip shade well, and she felt comfortable applying it without a mirror.

Who It’s For: Dry skin types will love this nourishing formula. It cuts out the need to layer an intensive lip balm with a pigmented, shiny gloss. The shea butter packed into it works exceptionally well to treat fine lines and wrinkles in the lips.

Worth Noting: It can feel gritty initially due to the micro-shimmer particles.

Shades: 9 | Key Ingredients: Shea butter | Size: 0.47 oz | Fragrance-Free: No

Talya, tester: “It gives a classy shimmer that is not overly obvious or cheap-looking. The texture is also great, as it feels moist and moisturizing without being sticky or gloopy, which is so often an issue for lip glosses. And, while the product is on the higher end of the price range, a little goes a long way, and I think it would last for months even with regular use.”

Our Testing Process

Four members of InStyle’s beauty team researched and tested a handful of Jones Road products, some of which were provided by the brand as samples. After wearing them for a couple of weeks, the editors evaluated their favorites and wrote about their experiences using them in this story.

They considered factors such as wear, finish, comfort, and longevity, noting each product’s texture, whether it was easy to apply and layer, how well it worked with other products, and whether or not it could be used for multiple purposes. Our team also noted what could be improved, such as the addition of SPF to several products, for example.

What to Keep in Mind

  • Ingredients: Jones Road products are more than just makeup; most also deliver skin care benefits, harnessing ingredients like jojoba seed oil, coconut oil, sunflower seed oil, and vitamin E to hydrate and heal skin. Jojoba seed oil acts as a powerful hydrator, mending cracked skin and diminishing the appearance of scars. Vitamin E oil can speed up lash growth, making them sprout longer and thicker. But it’s more than what’s included; it’s also about what’s not included. Jones Road products are free of phthalates, sulfates, petrolatum, polyethylene glycol, cyclic silicones, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, bisphenol A, and other harsh ingredients. Its clean formulas are safe for various skin types, including sensitive, acne-prone, and reactive.
  • Shade Range: Jones Road’s inclusive shade range remains a stand-out quality of the brand. Its products go beyond the standard handful of shades, including options for those with yellow and pink undertones. For example, you can find pencils customized to light, medium, and dark skin with yellow undertones. It’s also relatively easy to find the right shade for yourself using the brand’s “Find My Shade” questionnaire.

Your Questions, Answered

What is clean beauty?

Before we dive into the ins and outs of “clean beauty,” it’s vital to point out that there is no official FDA-approved definition that distinguishes clean beauty products from others. Clean beauty should also not be confused with vegan or sustainable beauty. It simply refers to the absence of harmful ingredients, but since the term is largely unregulated, there isn’t an industry-wide standard. Each brand can create its own definition for what it considers harmful.

Jones Road describes its clean products as adhering to “more stringent guidelines than those set by the European Union to eliminate over 2,700 potentially harmful ingredients.” While Jones Road is not an eco-certified brand, it is Leaping Bunny Certified as completely cruelty-free. That being said, if you have specific skin sensitivities, such as to fragrance, we recommend going to the brand’s website to see which products are fully fragrance-free, since many contain aromatic plant extracts and active essential oils. You can also search for the brand’s vegan products, which include What the Foundation, Just Enough Tinted, and The Mascara.

Does makeup expire?

Yes, makeup expires. You’ll find an expiration date on each product, so make sure to discard any items that have surpassed the expiration date. If you keep products in a dry and cool place, you may be able to extend their shelf lives. Unopened products that remain tightly sealed in their original packaging will last a little longer as well. Creamy products tend to be the first ones to go, as the oil can spoil. Meanwhile, pencils, lipsticks, and powders typically have a longer runway.
