A good travel makeup case is one of those things you don’t think much about—until you’re standing in a dim hotel bathroom, digging for a lip balm at the bottom of an overstuffed bag or discovering a leaky serum has coated everything you packed. When you travel with makeup and skincare, the case you choose matters more than you might expect. It needs to be protective, keep things visible and organized, and still fit comfortably in a carry-on or backpack.
To understand what actually works on the road, Travel + Leisure editors spent six months evaluating 52 makeup cases, with ongoing testing as we travel with our top picks. As someone who travels frequently and owns multiple makeup cases in different sizes, I have firsthand experience in the category. Our favorite makeup cases balance protection, organization, and ease of use, whether you’re packing light or traveling with your full routine.
Why We Love It

This cosmetic case has a practical dual-compartment design—elastic brush organizers up top and a spacious, see-through bucket below—which kept our makeup secure, visible, and organized.
The Away Clear Cosmetic Case was the most versatile makeup bag we tested, earning it our Best Overall pick. It worked just as well for everyday errands and commutes as it did for short trips, keeping everything easy to see and reach—even when packed at the bottom of a backpack. The two-compartment layout is simple but practical: brushes and smaller items stay in place up top thanks to built-in elastic loops, while the clear bottom section fits palettes and full-size foundation bottles without feeling cramped or needing constant rearranging.
The case’s construction—made from recycled polyester, durable plastic, and a recycled leather handle—gave it a premium, sturdy feel, though that rigid shape also makes it take up more room when packing. Additionally, the zippers felt smooth, secure, and easy to close fully, successfully preventing potential spills, and the clear plastic is easy to clean. While it’s not exactly wallet-friendly, its durability, smart organization, and seamless transition from everyday use to longer trips make it a worthwhile investment.
The Details: 8.9 x 5.5 x 5.7 inches | 8.64 ounces | 4.8-liter capacity | 2 compartments, 1 pocket, brush holders | Plastic, leather, and polyester
The Relavel Travel Makeup Case is a great choice for travelers who prefer to keep their products completely separate. It opens fully so you can see what you’ve packed at a glance, and the adjustable dividers make it easy to set up the interior around different product sizes. You can remove them if you wish, but if you use them all, you can create seven different compartments to place your makeup in, as well as slip pockets on the lid. The dividers themselves feel sturdy, hold their shape, and stay put, which made getting (and staying!) organized easy, even while on the go.
We filled the case with palettes, brushes, and bottles, and were happy to find that nothing shifted or broke in transit, thanks to the protective padding along the exterior. Because it’s on the boxier side, the case works best in a carry-on or checked bag. It’s also worth noting that the strap is adjustable, so you can wear it crossbody, over the shoulder, or as a backpack, though we thought it felt a little unstable.
The Details: 10.3 x 9 x 3.6 inches | 7 compartments, pockets, brush holders | Waterproof Oxford fabric

This dual-compartment train case is stylish, thoughtfully organized with removable dividers and elastic loops, and includes a handheld mirror.
This stunning vegan leather case tops our list of all the train cases we’ve ever tested, with a dual-compartment design and a handle on top. It has two-way zippers and a top compartment that folds backward, making it easy to pack, as well as a removable divider to compartmentalize your makeup routine, although you can take it out if you’d prefer one big empty space in the bottom part of the case. There are also elastic loops to hold brushes in place. We especially loved the large handheld mirror, which has its own sleeve to place it in. This came in handy for touch ups on the go. We found the stain-resistant lining and removable divider incredibly easy to clean. Overall, the case is on the bulkier side and can be hard to pack in smaller bags, but it can undoubtedly hold a ton of products.
The Details: 9.4 x 7.1 x 6.7 inches | 2.1 pounds | 2 compartments, removable divider, elastic loops | Handheld mirror | Vegan leather

This cosmetic case is packed with innovative features—most notably the removable magnetic brush divider and included travel mirror—that make packing, organizing, and accessing makeup feel effortless.
Equal parts chic and functional, the Béis Cosmetic Case earns high praise for its thoughtful, genuinely useful features. During testing, the removable magnetic brush divider securely held about five brushes and slipped out easily when we wanted to free up space, making packing feel flexible rather than restrictive. A shallow zippered pocket on the lid worked well for palettes and powders, while the roomy main compartment fit full-size bottles, extra palettes, and additional products without requiring us to play a game of makeup Tetris. The bottom compartment lacks individual dividers or straps, so although the case is very sturdy, bottles aren’t separately secured.
We also appreciated how easy it was to see everything at a glance, and the includedLED travel mirrorfelt like a real bonus rather than an afterthought. In terms of durability, the structured exterior and hardware felt sturdy and well-made. Even after shaking the bag and dropping it during testing, nothing inside broke or spilled.

With a unique clamshell design and a 6-liter capacity, this cosmetics case is seriously spacious, fitting all your essentials without ever feeling cramped.
If space is your top priority, look no further than the Calpak Medium Clear Cosmetics Case—the most spacious option on this list. T+L senior testing editorJackie Cucco has owned this case for about a year and has taken it on several trips, including a 10-day trip to Japan. During testing, the 6-liter interior comfortably fit full-size powders, palettes, brushes, and hair accessories, with room to spare. As Cucco aptly puts it, “You can fill every single inch of it with product.”
Made from thick, transparent PVC, the case is water resistant, easy to wipe clean, and lets you see what’s inside at a glance. The sturdy zippers have held up well over time, and the case’s book-style opening—with two large zippered halves—makes it easy to arrange products and see nearly everything at once. Although accessing items requires unzipping both sides, the clear construction helps you quickly spot what you’re looking for from any angle. A small mesh pocket in the center is useful for tweezers, Q-tips, and other small essentials, though there are no additional dividers to hold bottles in place and no padding to protect products from drops.
The Details: 9.75 x 7.75 x 5 inches | 1.3 pounds | 6-liter capacity | 2 compartments, 1 pocket | Polyurethane (PU) and PVC

Despite its compact size, the Mila Toiletry Organizer fits more than expected thanks to its tall shape and removable dividers, which keep makeup secure while maximizing vertical space.
The cylinder-shaped Dagne Dover Mila Toiletry Organizer makes smart use of vertical space. We tested the large size, which is the most compact option on this list, and it also comes in an even smaller size. Despite its size, it proved surprisingly roomy, holding everything from powder compacts and lipsticks to makeup brushes, travel-size perfumes, and even a small jewelry pouch. We were especially impressed by how protective the case felt despite its soft exterior: Even after aggressive shaking and several drop tests, nothing inside shifted, broke, or spilled. Similarly, the makeup case kept its contents intact when wedged into an overstuffed bag.
The upright design opens wide for easy access, while six adjustable dividers let you customize the layout depending on what you’re packing. With the dividers in place, makeup stayed neatly organized and secure; when removed, the bag accommodated even more items. The dividers attach with Velcro, which held up well during testing—the mesh stayed intact and didn’t fray or snag, even with frequent repositioning. There’s also a small interior triangular carabiner clip that’s useful for securing items like keys or a compact accessory pouch.
The Details: 5.5 x 5.5 x 7.5 inches (large) | 8 ounces | 3.7-liter capacity | 1 compartment with 6 dividers, 4 elastic loops, 1 pocket | Carabiner clip | Polyester

An adjustable upright layout—with dedicated pockets, loops, and dividers—keeps makeup organized and easy to access without rummaging.
What to Consider
-
Because of its upright design, it takes up more space than a traditional flat makeup bag, and there’s no handle for carrying.
The Parallel Traveller excels at keeping products upright and easy to see. Its tall, structured silhouette keeps everything from brushes and lipsticks to foundation and travel-size toiletries securely in place. During a long weekend trip to Chicago, it worked equally well as a makeup case and toiletry organizer. Inside, the organization is extensive yet intuitive, with 16 wall pockets, four mesh pouches, five elastic loops, and two dividers that you can adjust to fit what you’re packing. The sides fold open like flower petals, making it easy to see everything at once, and the narrow base helps keep the case from tipping over on the counter. It does take up more space than a flat bag, but it flattens down enough to fit into a tote or carry-on.
The case comfortably fit a full makeup routine—including full-size foundation and sunscreen—along with several travel-size toiletries. The vegan leather exterior and water-resistant interior wiped clean easily, and after weeks of use, the materials and zippers showed no signs of wear.
The Details: 8 x 7 x 4.5 inches (medium) | 8.5 ounces | 16 wall pockets, 4 elastic mesh pouches, 2 adjustable dividers, 5 elastic loops | Vegan leather and water-resistant canvas; water-resistant twill polyester lining
For under $15, the Wandering Nature Makeup Bag punches well above its price point. T+L editor Kayla Kitts used it daily on a six-day trip to Tennessee and found that everything stayed visible and easy to reach, noting that “you don’t have to dig through too much to find what you need.”
The softside shallow design includes a separate brush compartment in the lid, with space for six or more brushes behind a clear, wipeable cover that keeps tools protected and easy to spot. The main compartment—organized with six stretchy slots and an interior pocket—comfortably held mostly full-size makeup, skincare, and tools, including palettes and even a small pill organizer, without feeling overstuffed. The case closes with double zippers to keep everything securely contained, and even when packed full, it compresses easily in a suitcase. A sturdy top handle made it convenient to carry between rooms, sealing its status as an excellent value pick.
The Details: 9.4 x 5.5 x 5.5 inches | 9.12 ounces | 1 compartment, brush holders, elastic loops, 3 side wall pockets, exterior pocket | Vegan leather

The pockets aren’t adjustable in size, so while they’re easy to remove, you’re limited to the preset layout when organizing larger or oddly shaped items.
The Luyavogue Foldable Cosmetic Bag stands out for its flexible, modular design, which offers more versatility than most makeup bags we tested. It opens flat to reveal four clear, zippered pockets, making it easy to sort products by category and see everything at a glance. Each pocket is detachable, allowing travelers to grab just what they need for commuting, errands, or a quick refresh, while the full bag functions like a compact vanity when laid flat or hung up.
During testing, the case comfortably held an entire everyday makeup routine—mostly full-size products—along with skincare, tools, and extras like lashes and nail clippers. Full-size cleansers didn’t fit, but travel-size skincare slid in easily. Since the case is a bit bulky when fully loaded, it makes the most sense if you use the detachable pockets and pack only what you actually need—especially if you like to mix and match depending on the trip.
The Details: 9.4 x 4.7 x 4.7 inches | 13.1 ounces | 4 compartments | Faux leather
Other Makeup Bags We Liked
The following makeup bags didn’t make our top picks, but each has standout features that could still work well for certain travelers, depending on packing style and priorities.
Boacay Hanging Travel Toiletry Bag: This budget-friendly hanging bag impressed us with its spaciousness and wide compartments. That said, the materials felt less durable than our top picks, and the open-ended middle compartments limited how functional the organization was for smaller items.
The Flat Lay Co. Marshmallow Makeup Box Bag: The lay-flat design of this cotton case offers excellent visibility and easy access to products. However, the soft, unstructured shape offers minimal internal organization, allows items to shift during transit, and takes up significant counter space when fully opened.
Travel + Leisure
Athleta All About Large Cosmetic Pouch: This soft, packable pouch fits a full makeup and skincare routine, but the unstructured design offers minimal internal organization and limited protection for fragile items.
Travel + Leisure
Cuyana Leather Travel Case Set: This two-piece leather set lets you split essentials between bags or pack everything together, depending on the trip. The soft leather offers limited protection and could be harder to clean if liquids spill.

Our Testing Process
To determine the best travel makeup cases, Travel + Leisure editors and testers evaluated 52 makeup cases over a six-month testing period, with additional testing ongoing. Each case was packed with a full lineup of makeup, skincare, and toiletries in both travel sizes and full sizes if space allowed. We packed the cases on at least four trips, including commutes, errands, weekend getaways, and flights, noting if contents shifted around, broke, or spilled inside. We then evaluated the cases on design, capacity, packability, durability, quality, and overall value, looking for cases that were spacious yet not bulky, protective, and full of practical organizational features like dual compartments or brush holders. After each use, we checked for spills, breakage, shifting contents, zipper performance, and signs of wear, while also evaluating how easy each case was to access, see into, clean, and repack.
Tips for Buying
Look for a size compatible with your travel bag
Before settling on a makeup case, it’s worth thinking about how—and where—you actually pack. For example, a case that works perfectly in a rolling carry-on may feel awkward in a backpack, just as a soft pouch that slips easily into a tote might not offer enough protection in checked luggage. If you usually travel with a divided carry-on or a slim weekender, be sure to also pay close attention to the specific dimensions so you have extra room for other travel essentials and accessories. Softside cases and pouches are typically easier to pack and squish into your travel bag than more rigid, structured cases that will take up more space.

Make sure your makeup will fit
The right makeup case depends less on how much you own and more on what you pack. If you travel with full-size foundations, skincare bottles, or toiletries, look for a case with enough height to keep bottles upright and minimize leaks—bonus points for some form of internal support, like elastic loops or adjustable dividers. If you tend to gravitate towards palettes and powders, flatter, wider compartments tend to work better, reducing stacking and the cracks that can come with it.
Travel + Leisure
Pay attention to design features
Organization details like adjustable dividers, elastic loops, and built-in compartments directly affect how much you can realistically fit. Dividers and loops help keep products from shifting in transit, but too many fixed sections can work against you by limiting flexibility. For a more adaptable setup—especially on longer trips—look for a case that allows you to customize the layout or remove dividers as needed.
Beyond core organization, keep an eye out for some nice-to-have features. Detachable brush panels are especially useful for keeping tools clean and easy to access, while included mirrors can be handy for travelers who often get ready in low-light hotel bathrooms.
