As part of National Pilgrim Pathy Week, the team at Lough Derg is hosting a guided walk around the lakeshore.
The event takes place on Easter Monday, April 1, and there will be an option of an 8km or 12km route.
A spokesperson took to Facebook to say: “Join Father La and the Lough Derg team to learn something of the history of this place of ancient pilgrimage, taking in the beautiful and rugged landscape from scenic viewpoints along the way.”
Walking and rambler groups who wish to experience the path are welcome to attend.
And if April 1 doesn’t suit, the same walk is being offered on Sunday, May 26 and Sunday, September 1.
Anyone wishing to take place is asked to book via www.loughderg.ie or by email to info@loughderg.org or by calling 071 9861518.
Lough Derg is considered one of the oldest places of pilgrimage in the world, dating back to the sixth century. It is believed that St Patrick went to retreat there for a period of prayer, staying in a cave on the lake island.
Saint Dabheog is the patron saint and a founder of a monastery on an island in Lough Derg.
Known as St Patrick’s Purgatory today, the island continues to welcome pilgrims seeking to celebrate and reinforce their faith. In a world where we are ‘always on’ it is perhaps more necessary than ever to have places to go and switch off from busy, everyday lives.
