A freight train transporting automobiles derailed Saturday afternoon in downtown near Petco Park.

Three rail cars derailed near the intersection of Harbor Drive and Switzer Street around 4 p.m., damaging a pillar of the Harbor Drive bridge.

There were no injuries or hazardous materials involved, said Lena Kent, spokesperson for freight railroad network BNSF Railway.

City officials said on Instagram Sunday that it is evaluating the condition of the bridge, which elevates Harbor Drive above the train tracks, for needed repairs.

Cleanup continued into Sunday, and Harbor Drive has been closed to traffic between Park Boulevard and Beardsley Street.

BNSF said it is investigating the cause of the derailment.

“Grateful for the work of the first responders and City crews on scene,” Mayor Todd Gloria said on X Sunday morning. “Please avoid the area and expect traffic impacts as cleanup efforts continue.”
