The scheme is part of a £16.5 million project funded by the Department for Transport’s Local EV Infrastructure (LEVI) fund and private sector investment.
The project will also support the transition to greener transport across the wider Dorset region.
A total of 564 on-street chargers will be delivered across the conurbation, offering 1,128 charging sockets for public use.
Councillor Andy Hadley, BCP Council cabinet member for climate response, environment and energy, said: “We want people to be empowered we are trying to help the people who don’t have an on-street parking space.
“It’s about having lower speed chargers in residential areas and for visitors to be able to charge more economically than the fast chargers.”
The rollout will take place in three phases, The first will see 150 chargers (300 sockets) installed by March 31, 2027.
A further 204 chargers (408 sockets) will follow by March 31, 2028, and the final phase will add 210 chargers (420 sockets) by March 31, 2029.
EVs are considered cheaper to run than petrol and diesel vehicles and produce lower emissions.
Cllr Hadley said: “We have got some sites identified across every locality, but we’ve tried to spread them across the whole of BCP from the outset, and then as we build there’ll be more and more locations.
“The team has been really careful in trying to avoid spots right outside people’s front doors.”
The new infrastructure is part of a wider effort to meet growing demand for electric vehicles.
Cllr Hadley said: “Last year and this year, there’s more EV and hybrids than there are diesel and petrol cars registered in the BCP area. So it’s already reached a tipping point and there is still people going out to buy electric vehicles, if we don’t give them the infrastructure they’re not going to be able to charge their vehicles. So we are trying to do a good thing.
“This is about supporting people who want to drive.”
The chargers will be delivered by chargepoint provider Connected Kerb.
