The Nation Media Group Uganda has reechoed its commitment to enhancing campaigns aimed at promoting safe road use across the country.

As part of this initiative, the group, a leading media company across Africa, announced that for the fifth time in a row, it will participate in the Automotive Show that will be held on the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds between July 17th and 19th this year.

Part of the initiative includes road drives and testing automobiles, which is seen as a way of promoting safe vehicles on the roads.

It will be held in partnership with the Ministry of Works and Transport, financial institutions and automotive dealers.

Nation Media Group Uganda’s Audience Engagement Manager, Ms Freda Ajok, says the group is committed to promoting road safety by amplifying campaigns through its different platforms.

NMG-U brands include the Daily Monitor Newspaper, NTV, Spark TV, Dembe and KFM radio stations, and Online platforms.

At the same occasion, the Ministry of Works and Transport announced a move to introduce assessors who will be responsible for computing damages and recommending compensation for victims and survivors of road crashes.

Mr Winston Katushabe, the Chief Licensing Officer at the Ministry of Works and Transport, said the assessors will guide and compel motorists to ensure that their victims are fully compensated.

He explained that they will take charge of crash sites, conduct investigations into incidents, and their findings will be tendered as evidence to the police and in court.

“For example, if there is a crash, say of a bus or any vehicle, and this person has died, we will look at whether this person was working, the salary and will compute the salary until the time that person is expected to die,” he said.

Mr Katushabe says the government believes that the measure will weed out all unworthy road vehicles that are prone to causing crashes.

He disclosed that the government is in the final stage of drafting the new law and will then carryout sensitization of the courts and public.

Ministry of Works and Transport Spokesperson, Mr Allan Ssempebwa, says the initiative is crucial for enhancing road safety.
