Congestion was building in the area, with both roads closed off by police. Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) were seen conducting enquiries at the scene.

The crash is thought to have involved two vehicles. One of the cars involved appeared to have been badly damaged, landing on an island at the crossing.

A pedestrian was rushed to hospital from the scene with serious injuries. No further details have been confirmed by Greater Manchester Police.

A force spokesperson said: “Officers are currently responding to a road traffic collision on Great Ducie Street at the junction of Trinity Way.

“Road closures are in place so we would ask that people avoid the area where possible. Thank you for your patience at this time.”
