Report: Rising insurance costs are pricing enthusiasts out of performance cars

Theft data is driving the repricing

Underwriters are not operating on instinct. Theft exposure, crash severity, repair costs, horsepower, location, driver age, and prior claims history all factor into how performance trims are rated relative to standard versions of the same model. The Highway Loss Data Institute, part of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, found that 2020 to 2022 Charger SRT Hellcats recorded 25 whole-vehicle theft claims per 1,000 insured vehicle years. The same data found that 2022 to 2024 Camaro ZL1 models had a whole-vehicle theft rate 39 times the average for all vehicles.
