Volkswagen Unveils AI-Driven EV Strategy at Auto China 2026

Volkswagen Group has unveiled an ambitious expansion into smart mobility at its Media Night ahead of Auto China 2026, highlighting a new generation of electric and intelligent vehicles designed specifically for the Chinese market.

The showcase included four global premieres and a clear message: China remains central to the company’s transformation into a technology-driven mobility leader.

A China-Focused Strategy Gains Momentum

At the core of Volkswagen’s latest push is its “in China, for China” strategy. The approach ensures that everything from vehicle design and digital cockpit experiences to advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) is tailored to local customer expectations.

This localization effort is already translating into scale. Volkswagen plans to launch around 30 electrified models in China by 2027 and expand that number to 50 by 2030, including roughly 30 fully electric vehicles. The lineup will span battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids, and extended-range EVs, marking the brand’s largest electrification offensive in the region.

Strong Local R&D Powers Advanced Technology

A key advantage behind Volkswagen’s rapid rollout is its growing local research and development capability. Through partnerships and in-house innovation, the company is now able to develop core technologies entirely within China.

Its intelligent driving unit, CARIZON, recently delivered its first Level 2 Advanced ADAS system, debuting with the ID. UNYX 07. Upcoming models will expand on this with enhanced features such as Navigation on Autopilot (NOA) for both city and highway driving, along with automated parking functions. These advancements demonstrate how quickly locally developed technologies are being integrated into production vehicles.

Four Global Premieres Showcase New Direction

The highlight of the event was a set of four world premieres spanning multiple brands and segments, underlining Volkswagen’s multi-layered strategy in China.

The Volkswagen brand introduced the ID. AURA T6, the first model in a new ID. AURA series aimed at the highly competitive mid-size electric SUV segment. Built on the China Electronic Architecture (CEA), the model supports advanced driver assistance features and over-the-air updates.

Also revealed was the ID. UNYX 09, a near-production all-electric sedan developed by Volkswagen Anhui. Measuring around five meters in length, the model combines high-performance computing, advanced L2 driving assistance, and an AI-powered digital assistant.

Volkswagen is also targeting the fast-growing entry-level NEV segment through the electrification of its JETTA sub-brand. The newly unveiled JETTA X concept previews a “Modern Robust” design language and signals a broader shift toward affordable electric mobility. The brand plans to introduce four NEV models by 2028, with the first arriving this year.

On the premium side, Audi showcased the AUDI E7X, a fully electric large SUV developed specifically for China. Built on a platform co-developed with SAIC, the E7X combines strong performance—offered in 300 kW and 500 kW variants—with quattro all-wheel drive and a spacious, tech-focused cabin. Notably, the model is expected to introduce Level 3 automated driving capabilities, marking a significant milestone for Audi.

“Agentic AI for All” Signals Next Phase

Beyond new vehicles, Volkswagen used the event to outline its next major technological leap: the transition toward AI-defined vehicles.

The newly announced “Agentic AI for All” roadmap introduces an onboard AI agent powered by a locally trained large language model. Unlike traditional voice assistants, this system is designed to proactively understand user intent, execute complex commands across multiple vehicle systems, and deliver a more natural, conversational experience.

Importantly, the AI operates entirely within the vehicle, ensuring that user data remains secure and does not leave the car—an increasingly critical factor in the Chinese market.

Looking Ahead: CEA 2.0 and Multi-Agent Systems

Volkswagen’s roadmap extends beyond current models. The next-generation CEA 2.0 architecture, expected in 2027, will unify vehicle systems on a centralized computing platform. This will enable a Multi-Agent AI ecosystem, where separate AI agents manage driving, cockpit functions, and connected services in a coordinated manner.

This evolution marks a decisive shift toward fully AI-defined vehicles, positioning Volkswagen to compete more aggressively in China’s fast-moving EV and smart mobility landscape.

The Bigger Picture

Volkswagen’s latest announcements underscore the importance of China not just as a market, but as a global innovation hub. By combining local development with global engineering standards, the company is aiming to regain momentum in one of the world’s most competitive EV markets.

With a growing portfolio of intelligent electric vehicles and a clear focus on AI integration, Volkswagen is signaling that its transformation is well underway—and accelerating.
